When the first topic where you were able to predict this match went up over half of the field was predicting Phoenix. What happened? I wanted to gain some spots on this match...

Heh, that's part of the reason I'd like to see a "true" oracle challenge one day, where people are locked in to their picks before the start of the contest. The biggest complication would be handling later round matches where people would have impossible picks based on earlier eliminations, but with a fair penalty system, it could work.

Picking them all before the contest starts wouldn't be any fun for me. I wouldn't really have any reason to check up on the contest until the very end.

I do, however, think a modified version where a person's first prediction is their final one, no changes allowed, would be interesting.

The Ultimate Oracle Challenge
The idea went through the usual comitees back last winter, didn't pull through. Possibly a side-contest at some point, but it'll never replace the main challenge, the last-minute rush, etc...

That would be interesting. I don't see anything wrong with making the deadline for Round 2's predictions right before Round 2 starts, and so forth. Hm...better yet, require everyone to send their picks through email on top of that. :p

Someone doesn't like the hosts getting some sleep =P
Processing through e-mails would kill the very soul of the contest. Plus everything that was said above =P

Picking them all before the contest starts wouldn't be any fun for me. I wouldn't really have any reason to check up on the contest until the very end.

I do, however, think a modified version where a person's first prediction is their final one, no changes allowed, would be interesting.

That would be tough to pull, but we'll add it on the suggestions list.

More on-topic, I'm looking (once again) like a pretty sad idiot...

I see the Phoenix supporters at the top of the board are getting scared!

Actually, I stopped thinking Phoenix would win weeks ago... I just wanted to have a Phoenix prediction until it was time to change.

Heh, that's part of the reason I'd like to see a "true" oracle challenge one day, where people are locked in to their picks before the start of the contest. The biggest complication would be handling later round matches where people would have impossible picks based on earlier eliminations, but with a fair penalty system, it could work.

Personally I really dislike this idea. Having both at the same time would splinter interest and would give you two contests that both have less competitors than the current one. And I think the way the current contest works is much more fun - it gives people a reason to come back every day and it requires you adjust for new information learned during the contest, which is an important skill. Plus allowing people to predict up to the last minute leads to greater participation. People can find out about it in the middle of the contest and join in, and if they like it, they come back next time. If predictions were closed before the contest, that would never happen.

Hm...better yet, require everyone to send their picks through email on top of that.

I've thought about having secret predictions before, but the main reason I don't is that it would destroy the "board contest" feel. Right now you can see other people predicting, you can comment on their predictions, etc. If you made predictions by email (or more likely, submitted them through a form), it would feel a lot more like you were just predicting by yourself instead of competing with a big group.

I like it the way it is, it's just that watching half of the top ten "wuss out" and go with the safe pick every time makes for very little movement amongst the top. it's probably smart to do so when you've got so much to lose. I like watching people fly all around the leaderboard, self included.

Match #21 Results
Sora 75.61%
Tingle 24.39%

Today one of the biggest wildcards of the contest, Tingle, went up against Sora and used his Legend of Zelda fanbase to perform better than expected. This was still the biggest blowout of Sora's career as he managed to get the tripling, something he couldn't do against either of the 47's. The consensus was Sora with 78.41% and the average score was 45.62. All 135 predictions were for Sora.

Best Five Picks:
1) ps2rulezzz - Sora 75.63% (+49.98)
2) KrusTy the KloWn - Sora 75.57% (+49.96)
3) GoldSlime35 - Sora 75.66% (+49.95)
4) Rodri316 - Sora 75.55% (+49.94)
4) JayLv100 - Sora 75.55% (+49.94)

Today's top predictor is the guy known for his amazing average, ps2rulezzz! This is his third top 5 of the contest and 16th lifetime. Second is Krusty the Klown, with his second 2nd place (and second top 5) this contest. The guy who almost won last contest's Oracle, GoldSlime35, places third. Rodri and JayLv100 tie for 4th in this high scoring top 5 with 49.94 points.

Complete Match Ranking:

Current Leaderboard:
1) DSRage - 970.23
2) cyko - 967.81
3) Aprosenf - 961.57
4) Kaxon - 961.17
5) Luster Soldier - 959.71

DSRage once again holds on to the top spot, gaining a little bit of ground against cyko and Aprosenf, who both had higher predictions. Kaxon finally gets tired of fifth place after five days and moves up to fourth! He's celebrating his 69th day on the leaderboard today. Meanwhile, Luster Soldier is enjoying his second day on the leaderboard, but he falls behind Kaxon, dropping down to fifth.

Full Standings:

Top Team Scores:
1) Team mvp's - 99.39 (ps2rulezzz: +49.98 / basmeyer42: +49.41)
2) Team The Spirit of Truth - 98.55 (Draco1214: +48.61 / Rodri316: +49.94)
3) Team Unfinished FFP - 98.42 (Ed Bellis: +49.39 / Karma Hunter: +49.03)
4) Team Happy Happyists - 98.12 (Camden: +48.61 / meche313: +49.51)
5) Team Random - 97.90 (XIII is cool: +49.19 / Giggsalot: +48.71)

The defending champs, Team mvp's, make some noise today, getting the top score (powered by ps2rulezzz's top prediction). The leaderboard teams do well overall, as Team The Spirit of Truth, Team Unfinished FFP, and Team Happy Happyists are 2-3-4. Team Random (XIII is cool and Giggsalot) manages fifth with an impressive 97.9 points.

Complete Team Match Ranking:
http://www.oraclechallenge.com/archives.php?contest=SC2k6&type=teammatch&match=21

Team Leaderboard:
1) Team Unfinished FFP (Ed Bellis / Karma Hunter) - 1916.56
2) Team The Spirit of Truth (Draco1214 / Rodri316) - 1912.37

4) Team We Used To Be Good? (Kaxon / King Morgoth) - 1908.53
5) Team Happy Happyists (Camden / meche313) - 1902.96

There aren't too many changes on the leaderboard today, which isn't surprising considering how well three of the top 5 teams did. Team Unfinished FFP holds on to first place, while Team The Spirit of Truth moves back up one spot to second. Team Rage of Warcraft drops to third, while Teams We Used To Be Good? and Happy Happyists hold on to fourth and fifth, respectively.

yeah, but why would you pick otherwise and then change it? changing your mind is one thing, but going from Phoenix w/55% to Gordon with over 60% is one hell of a change of heart. not even Heroic Mario could pull that off!

Well, I can't speak for others, but often my first prediction doesn't mean much. Sometimes I go with my gut reaction, sometimes I just put down what I'd like to see... then closer to the match I actually look at the stats, think about it more closely, think about what I've read in the stats and discussion topic, and make a real prediction. So that's why sometimes I make huge changes in my predictions.

Current Prediction: Phoenix Wright vs. Gordon Freeman
From: Xuxon | Posted: 10/3/2006 5:49:00 AM | Message Detail
A couple times when I think it's a toss-up I'll predict with the majority rather than go with my gut if I don't want to risk as much (cost me in Kuja/Hand and Ocelot/Pac-Man) or vice versa if I'm way behind trying to catch up (which cost me in Kefka/Diablo and Starcraft/SSBM).

I guess predicting 60% in the end generally doesn't make it much of a toss-up, but this contest I had Celes barely winning in my prediction, and right before the match started I had a gut feeling The Boss would win with over 60%... if only I had listened to it. My opinion on The Boss didn't change, but I just started to think that Celes could really be significantly weaker than Terra. It still felt like a toss-up despite that 60% gut feeling.

Er, that is to say, I thought Diablo and SSBM were going to win, but that Kefka and Starcraft had a good enough chance that it was worth risking (say... 25% in my mind) to catch up.
