Nope, I had Squall ahead of him at first but then changed it. Now I'm regretting that.

Morgoth's Quickie Quick Questions! - Contest Day 7
1) Is Pyramid Head legit and deserves to come back? Or are his fan ridiculously dedicated?
He's too badass not to come back. He deserves a shot to take out some low-midcarder and show us what he's got.

2) First Knuckles, now Shadow, still like how far Sonic goes in your bracket? Because I sure don't!
As far as I can tell, he's got a relatively easy bracket to go through, I guess I could be more worried about the Master Chief/Dant/Ganon/Sonic match (assuming they all get there), but for some reason I think he's got it.

3) One week in, the Oracle scoring system, yay or nay?
I'm in 9th, so yay.

4) Still think you guys have a shot at winning a free game at some point? =P
Someobdy will. I just have a hunch.

1) Is Pyramid Head legit and deserves to come back? Or are his fan ridiculously dedicated?
I don't think he's legit, but he certainly should return, if only so we can see how he matches up against Laharl >_>

2) First Knuckles, now Shadow, still like how far Sonic goes in your bracket? Because I sure don't!
I have Sonic falling to Ganondorf, so I'm actually REALLY liking my bracket right now.

3) One week in, the Oracle scoring system, yay or nay?

Yay, although having a -1 or 2 for each character not in the correct spot would fit well. At least make it 45-x if you get the top two wrong, imo.

4) Still think you guys have a shot at winning a free game at some point? =P

...We're bound to get SOMETHING right. I'd give us right now a .01% chance.

Why not. I wouldn't mind him coming back. Arthas comes first though.

2) First Knuckles, now Shadow, still like how far Sonic goes in your bracket? Because I sure don't!

Yes. Sonic is no Knuckles or Shadow. He's goin' for the finals!

3) One week in, the Oracle scoring system, yay or nay?

I think it's too forgiving, for whatever reason. dunno how you could really remedy it, but a fairly bad pick ends up being in the mid-40s. there's almost no separation there, 4% off total is a mere one point.

I'll be lucky to get 45 today. Hooray. Shouldn't have gone with the upset :)

As for the questons:

1) Need fodder in the contest, PH will never get much more than that sort of a result yesterday.
2) I don't like my bracket at all. Didn't put a lot of effort into it though.
3) Nay, too close. I should be at least 50 points back and out of the running based on my picks, like usual. I guess that's a good thing, but too much pressure to stay close to the lead. Especially when the other person on my team seems to have disappeared.
4) Never thought that, I'll be happy with a top 5 or two. Two top 10's so far, so not too far off.

I'd certainly like to see him return over crap like Zelos or anything else from that abortion of a video game.

2) First Knuckles, now Shadow, still like how far Sonic goes in your bracket? Because I sure don't!

I still feel confident in Sonic. Every year people say the Noble NIne is going down because of some early, barely relevant match. You have to remember, Knuckles and Shadow only disappointed because the last time we saw them they went above and beyond our expectations.

3) One week in, the Oracle scoring system, yay or nay?

I'd still like to see some penalty for having the first 2 in the wrong order or something. That would put me near the top.

Morgoth's Quickie Quick Questions! - Contest Day 7
1) Is Pyramid Head legit and deserves to come back? Or are his fans ridiculously dedicated?

In 2005 PH scored 16.12% of the vote against Bowser. If you'd told me last week he was going to manage 16.18% in THIS poll, I'd have called you crazy, and in fact I still maintain that his managing that feat is the strangest result of the year so far. Not only is the Silent Hill series another two years past its prime, not only is Auron alone of comparable strength to Bowser, not only was a decentish mid-carder in Shadow there to suck some votes, but PH ALSO had to compete against about the closest thing the survival horror genre has to an icon. And not only that, we need to take into account that even if ALL of the people who supported PH back in '05 had voted him again in yesterday's match, that would only have amounted to 8.46% of the overall total, due to the explosion in votals we're experiencing this year.

So what the heck happened? His match pic was an improvement and certainly could have made him more recognizable, and I guess his appearance in the SH movie could have helped him some, even though only like two dozen people saw it. In summary... yes, we need to see him again someday, if only to shed a little more light on this mystery.

2) First Knuckles, now Shadow, still like how far Sonic goes in your bracket? Because I sure don't!

The rise in vote totals and continuing popularity of the Wii and DS had me thinking this season was going to favor the more casual-friendly, "cool looking" characters that would appeal to perhaps a bit of a younger audience, a description that Team Sonic would fit to a T, you'd think. Both Knux and Shadow had the best and most eye-catching pictures of their groups, I thought, and so yeah, it's weird that both have disappointed.

But that being said, no, I'm still ok with Sonic to the Final Four, just because who's going to stop him? Ganon? I think Midna has proven that (even on 'ZeldaFAQs') just being Zelda doesn't equal an auto-win in this format, so nay. Master Chief? H3 or no, he'd find a way to choke. Leon/Dante, not to that near-Elite level yet, Yuna same thing. But you know, maybe Squall could be the one to pull it off... Aw, but Snake will be on the other end, and we all saw that he can make Squall look borderline silly. Shoot. Yeah, still not seeing any way Sonic falls early.

3) One week in, the Oracle scoring system, yay or nay?

The system is good, but after seeing all these high scores I really feel we should stop dividing by 4 against the total incorrect, and instead just do 2 or so. I know it doesn't really change anything, but I mean, even the people down in 150th range are averaging nearly 43 points a match, and that just looks weird.

4) Still think you guys have a shot at winning a free game at some point? =P

"These guys" don't have a chance in heck at pulling off that particular stunning feat. ...I, however, will still be making it happen, and soon. Watch for it!

1) Is Pyramid Head legit and deserves to come back? Or are his fan ridiculously dedicated?

I can't see any fathomable reason for a sudden boost so either he horrendously underperformed last time around or he has extremely dedicated fans. In truth I think it's probably a mixture of the two. It might just be a case of more people hearing about him since his last outing. There might even have been some SFF between him and Chris. I really don't know. I think we can speculate all we want but we won't figure it out until we see him in a straight up one on one match again.

I don't know if he's deserving of coming back but I'm damn sure I'd like to see him back and others will do too so we can figure this out.

2) First Knuckles, now Shadow, still like how far Sonic goes in your bracket? Because I sure don't!

I'm not too concerned to be honest. Firstly there's nothing I can do about it now. Secondly, have you looked at his path to the finals? He'd have to majorly choke to even stand a chance of not making it decently far. He's a lock for his fourpack and the match after that. His divisional final might have been a cause for concern over him getting first place if Sora and Squall didn't SFF each other.

I don't think you can even start questioning him until the semi-finals at the least. I personally have him in second behind Snake so the question you're really asking is: Can he beat Master Chief and Dante/Ganondorf (Dante in my bracket)? Even if he's declined I wouldn't hesitate for a second about taking him over both of them.

I'm more worried that I picked Sora > Squall in all their matches. I looked at my bracket the day after the deadline and just thought 'Why the hell did I do that!?'. I can't even remember doing it but it happens I guess.

3) One week in, the Oracle scoring system, yay or nay?

It's hard for me to comment as this is my first oracle. It seems fair enough though and everybody is bound by the same system. It's not like we'd have some completely different runaway leader or something with a slight deviation in the rules. It's a big Yay from me. Great job guys, keep it up!

4) Still think you guys have a shot at winning a free game at some point? =P

You're kidding right? I never though I had a chance in the first place. I'll be happy if I can break 49 at some point!

Now I have a question for you. I have a spreadsheet that tells me everyones current live scores as the match progresses. How the hell do you guys keep everything updated? It took me forever to manually type out everyones predictions for the last match into my spreadsheet. Is there a quicker way that you guys use that I'm overlooking? Like a way I could just copy and paste everything or something?

Thanks, Scorpion for helping me to reach with you top 5!! Meh, first time I regret changing percentages, I had for Shadow at first around 25%.....

1) Is Pyramid Head legit and deserves to come back? Or are his fan ridiculously dedicated?

Both of them are right, I'd say. Of course, their fans are dedicated, and even could have been some SFF by Chris.....and at villains contest it was just an 8 seed. Yeah, it deserves to come back

2) First Knuckles, now Shadow, still like how far Sonic goes in your bracket? Because I sure don't!

Yeah, I'm happy how far I have Sonic. He's much stronger than both of themç

3) One week in, the Oracle scoring system, yay or nay?

Ok for me, but it's really hard to get less than 45.....although I did <.<

4) Still think you guys have a shot at winning a free game at some point? =P

I'd like to keep all four predictions, actually, and honestly I don't like the idea of changing mid-contest. I don't know how to do it mathematically, but ideally I'd like it so close predictions earned you more points than in a normal additive system. you have to REALLY suck to get under 40 points for a match right now, and that's crazy for a contest this unpredictable.

Yeah, we did everything with a spreadsheet up until the Villains contest, when there were less people than now... it still took a lot of time. For summer 2005, I made a MySQL database and wrote a Python script that parses the topic and puts all the predictions in the database. That's why we're so picky about things like percent signs. Entering predictions is MUCH faster than before now. The web site runs of the same database so we don't really have to update the site (just put everything in the DB).

It would be nice to have live updating scores on the site... I'm not sure if Morgoth wants to do any more work on that site right now though. =)

4) Still think you guys have a shot at winning a free game at some point?

About this one, I just noticed something looking at the poll that tips the odds even farther away from us. Maybe someone noticed this already. From the updater for the Ryu, Bowser, Toad, Mewtwo match:

2007-09-10 12:34:01
Bowser 29.50%
Mewtwo 23.05%
Ryu 37.66%
Toad 9.80%

2007-09-10 12:29:02
Bowser 29.50%
Mewtwo 23.05%
Ryu 37.64%
Toad 9.80%

The first one adds up to 100.01% and the second update to 99.99%. I'm sure that's due to the rounding factor. It doesn't help us at all if the final numbers end up in a configuration like that (since most of us are probably making predictions that add up exactly to 100.00%).

The scoring is just fine, everyone is bound by the same system. It doesn't matter that everyone gets 45+ every match so everyone appears to be close, because the margins are razor thin and it's just as hard to come back as to seperate from the pack.

I like purely doing the percentages, points for correct picks is for the real contest/guru, this is all about predicting percentages is it not?

1) Is Pyramid Head legit and deserves to come back? Or are his fan ridiculously dedicated?
I wouldn't mind if he comes backs or not, but I would prefer if he doesn't. I mean, he did a lot better to what we expected, but seriously now, we were giving Pyramid joke-entrant numbers. Also, he got on that match what I expect him to do in almost any match he is in, given his cult status. Still, I'll say that his pic in the Villian Contest was horrible.

2) First Knuckles, now Shadow, still like how far Sonic goes in your bracket? Because I sure don't!
To be serious here, I'm not surprised at those showings. Sure they didn't look to hot, but we don't really had a good reading on Shadow, and we have to admit that Knuckles was against two strong characters. At least we CAN say that FFX is looking pretty good for now. To answer the question, I'm still confident on Sonic.

3) One week in, the Oracle scoring system, yay or nay?
Mostly yay. As must people have say, we are used to a scoring system that penalizes your positioning, but we can also say that this contest is way different to the ones before. This contest being a lot harder than the regular ones, would have everyone up and down because of a penalizing system. In the end, I don't mind the scoring system, as I'm still having a blast with the Oracle. :)

1. The movie did help get a lot of people into the Silent Hill games that weren't before (i.e., me), so it does have more fans now than before. But it's still a fairly hard to find game, so it's not a big thing amongst the casuals. Pyramid Head's fans do seem quite dedicated, since he is one of the greatest characters ever, or so most people who know about him think. I would like to see him again to see how he does in a match.

2. Eh, my bracket. I already messed up some stupid things, like saying Jill would take second in round 2 and advance to round 3. Whoops. But I'm not worried about Sonic himself too much. He's too much of an icon. I think more minor characters from games are all having trouble here for whatever reason, whereas characters recognizable outside of a game are doing fairly well.

3. I'm fine with the system how it is for now, and obviously, don't change it mid-contest. I also don't want harsh penalties for wrong order. The chances of getting all four right is a lot tougher now, so there would be a lot of penalties. Plus, you go from zero wrong to two wrong, so you can't just do one penalty per character wrong. Or if the last place character is thrown in first, but the rest are in order, it isn't quite all four are wrong and you should get penalized for all four. I guess my point is, with the difficulty in predicting characters already, I think when a character is placed in the wrong spot, there already will be a big change in % for that character, and you lose points there.

4. If no one wins it by the end, I'll take the free game anyways.

1) Is Pyramid Head legit and deserves to come back? Or are his fan ridiculously dedicated?
Uh, neither? I have no idea what went on there, but the score against Bowser looks pretty believable and I have a hard time imagining 16% of voters are hardcore Silent Hill fans, I really do. I'd like to see PH in more 4-way matches, but give me Mewtwo, Arthas, even the return of Agent 47 rather than Pyramid Head in a future classic-format contest.

2) First Knuckles, now Shadow, still like how far Sonic goes in your bracket? Because I sure don't!
To be fair, there always was the possibility that Shadow faked it against Mario and was really guy-who-loses-to-Tidus. There's also the possibility that the combination of fellow fan-favorite and platformer icon Yoshi with a near-united Square core fanbase left Knuckles to beg for scraps at the Nintendo-vs.-Square table. Sonic to the finals still looks pretty good, especially in light of what's likely to happen if Ganon and Luigi have to deal with each other when they face Sonic.

3) One week in, the Oracle scoring system, yay or nay?
It's fine. It's odd, being out of contention without having scored below 42 (or maybe I'm not out of contention, ha ha!), but any penalty for incorrect ordering would have to be very carefully tweaked to ensure it is relevant without making the contest mostly about incurring the fewest penalties. Best to have some experience with the scores in this format before trying to figure out what that penalty should be.

4) Still think you guys have a shot at winning a free game at some point? =P
All we ever had in our favor was our numbers... another couple of thousand new entrants, and you'll be sweating bullets!

1) Is Pyramid Head legit and deserves to come back? Or are his fan ridiculously dedicated?

His %age was legit, but he's very borderline for a 64 character bracket. Any and all snubs (Tifa, etc.) deserve it over him in 64 character bracket.

I'd also rather see plenty of newcomers, like Goomba and Koopa Troopa and Bahamut and such, over him. Or old school guys like Ken. There's an endless list of characters who'd be more interesting than this guy.

2) First Knuckles, now Shadow, still like how far Sonic goes in your bracket? Because I sure don't!

I have Sonic>Squall, and Aeris or Sora should be in that match, then Snake>Sonic, then Snake>Sonic again. Snake>Sonic>Ganon/Master Chief/Dante seems to be the only one that seems a bit shaky, but I'd still do that.

3) One week in, the Oracle scoring system, yay or nay?

This is the best scoring system we've ever had. So Yay.

Penalties suck hard. Never bring them back. This is the Oracle, not the wannabe bracket ;)

4) Still think you guys have a shot at winning a free game at some point? =P

Ridiculously unlikely that someone will do this. But then, you knew that already :)

Another thing about penalties is that they affect everyone the same, but they add variance...in other words, they tilt things more towards luck than skill.

1) Is Pyramid Head legit and deserves to come back? Or are his fan ridiculously dedicated?

Sure, he seems to do just as good as some of the characters that make the bracket every year, and I'd much rather see him in one of these four way matches where his cult status actually gets him enough votes to have a blue bar next to his name before something like any of the three characters going up against Link.

2) First Knuckles, now Shadow, still like how far Sonic goes in your bracket? Because I sure don't!

Who beats him, Squall? Chief? I don't like Sonic at all, but the top division is where all the powerhouses seem to be, so Sonic should glide.

3) One week in, the Oracle scoring system, yay or nay?

Don't know, too busy shaking my fist at my predictions to worry about how many points I'm not getting.

4) Still think you guys have a shot at winning a free game at some point? =P

Of course. Just not in this contest.

Yes, he's one of the strongest Silent Hill characters that people actually recognize somewhat to vote for. I'd love to see him in another contest.

2) First Knuckles, now Shadow, still like how far Sonic goes in your bracket? Because I sure don't!
Yes, secondary characters seem to very every year but the top character never really does enough to make me sweat. The only semi-nervous match is the one with Sora. But that's next to impossible.

3) One week in, the Oracle scoring system, yay or nay?
I have no other idea of how to score. It seems everyone is so close that a prediction of 45pts makes you drop which seems weird to me. Maybe a slight penalty to wrong guesses since some are so close it could really change it.

4) Still think you guys have a shot at winning a free game at some point? =P
Heh, possibly.

On another note, do we really need to write CHANGE when we make changes. I never remember reading it in the rules and don't see how it would help the script like % do.

The first one adds up to 100.01% and the second update to 99.99%. I'm sure that's due to the rounding factor. It doesn't help us at all if the final numbers end up in a configuration like that (since most of us are probably making predictions that add up exactly to 100.00%).

The odds should be roughly 1/6 to end at 99.99%, 2/3 to end at 100.00% and 1/6 to end at 100.01%. I figured that out too before making that bet ;)

Wow, that first night of KM Talking Points was certainly a success! We got a ton of good opinions there, including many from non-Stats posters that we don't get to hear from too often.Hopefully we can turn that into a semi-nightly feature, if the results continue to be so favorable.

I was wondering what kind of attention it would get.....I can probably turn this into a after-a-good-match-nightly feature!

I've read everything but I need to get my predictions in....I'll comment on the comments in a bit, and probably come up with something....more?

Ridiculously dedicated fans. WhoTF is Pyramid Head?

3) One week in, the Oracle scoring system, yay or nay?

Meh. Although it's different from previous years and more forgiving, the person with the best predictions is still gonna win, right?

4) Still think you guys have a shot at winning a free game at some point? =P

Never did. Well, technically and mathematically we have a shot, just a really small shot. Really small. REALLY. Let's see what'll happen first ; somebody randomly dropping a needle from space and hitting KM in the head, or a perfect in this here shebang.

Match # 8 Results
Ryu 36.30%
Bowser 28.62%
Mewtwo 24.95%
Toad 10.14%

The surprises continue in this unpredictable contest... today Ryu reverses his one-on-one defeat by Bowser to finish almost 8% ahead of him! 109 people had Bowser first and Ryu second, while only 52 had Ryu ahead of Bowser. Mewtwo impressed while Toad disappointed (clearly demonstrating the bad taste of the voters, since Toad should have won). The consensus predictions were Bowser - 36.22%, Mewtwo - 20.09%, Ryu - 32.33%, Toad - 11.46%

Best Five Picks:
1) Mega Mana - Bowser 30.40% - Mewtwo 24.90% - Ryu 34.78% - Toad 9.92% (+49.10)
2) DSRage - Bowser 30.37% - Mewtwo 23.70% - Ryu 35.14% - Toad 12.79% (+48.29)
3) BeTheMan - Bowser 31.75% - Mewtwo 23.85% - Ryu 33.75% - Toad 10.65% (+48.17)
4) hochiminh155 - Bowser 32.00% - Mewtwo 24.00% - Ryu 33.00% - Toad 11.00% (+47.87)
5) transience - Bowser 33.23% - Mewtwo 21.56% - Ryu 35.45% - Toad 9.76% (+47.69)

Mega Mana gets his second top five a day after he had his first one, making the best prediction today by almost a point! DSRage, who had a great run in his rookie contest last year, gets second. Oracle mainstay BeTheMan takes third for his 23rd all time top 5. hochiminh gets his first ever top five in fourth, and tranny returns to the top 5 today in fifth.

Another former champ, King Morgoth, remains in third. MegatokyoEd moves up one spot to fourth, while supdawg returns to the leaderboard after a day off in 6th.

I remember that this was possible in previous years, and I think I tried to do the same secret as last year, but is there a way to see what other people have predicted for future matches, or for today's match for example?
