SC2k7 Oracle Challenge Discussion Topic 2
From: somdude04 | Posted: 9/17/2007 10:08:06 PM | Message Detail
Wow... I somehow missed that I was first and got my first top 5 team prediction... all by my lonesome. Even still, I missed one match in the contest AGAIN. Also, while the average score for matches is definitely up without the 5 point wrong pick penalty, the top score for matches is way down. Despite that being a 1st place pick, it only qualifies as my 30th highest scoring pick.

With Link at 50% I'm getting:
Link - 50.00%
Bidoof - 17.80%
Edgeworth - 10.72%
Agent J - 5.36%

Yes, these are the numbers I got. They don't scale back because the multiplier is 50/45, not 55/50.

This is not the old x-stats we're talking about..... under the laws I used, the factor is 55/50. We're used to using 50/45 because the assumptions weren't the same...

No, the number isn't 55/50, because if 2007 Link gets 55% on BL, the strength to use with your formula is 55.56%.

It's not like the old formula has changed at all. If you have a character whose strength is x, it doesn't matter that their strength was derived from your formula, you still calculate it the same way if you're changing the opponent x is based on.

Match # 15 Results
Crono 48.18%
Raiden 20.15%
Sam Fisher 19.86%
Simon Belmont 11.81%

Crono won this one with ease as expected, but Sam Fisher nearly gave Raiden a run for his money while Simon Belmont completely disappointed. I guess Raiden isn't as much stronger than 2k3 suggested as some of us thought he would be. 109 people correctly predicted Crono and Raiden advancing; 9 were almost right with Crono and Sam Fisher, while 13 had Crono and Simon (one of those with Simon in first). The consensus predictions were Crono 47.50%, Raiden 21.94%, Sam 15.51%, Simon 14.99%.

Best Five Picks:
1) BeTheMan - Crono 48.20% - Raiden 19.70% - Sam 18.55% - Simon 13.55% (+49.12)
2) ps2rulezzz - Crono 48.80% - Raiden 20.70% - Sam 17.50% - Simon 12.00% (+49.07)
3) DaruniaTheGoron - Crono 48.00% - Raiden 21.00% - Sam 18.00% - Simon 13.00% (+48.98)
4) supdawg - Crono 46.05% - Raiden 20.23% - Sam 20.86% - Simon 12.86% (+48.93)
5) Yesmar - Crono 47.00% - Raiden 21.31% - Sam 18.33% - Simon 13.36% (+48.64)

We have some frequent top 5ers on the list today: BeTheMan in first, ps2rulezzz in second, and Yesmar in fifth all have 20 or more lifetime top 5s. DaruniaTheGoron is third, getting his second top 5 of the contest, while supdawg is fourth, placing in the top 5 for the second day in a row.

Complete Match Ranking:
http://www.oraclechallenge.com/archives.php?contest=SC2k7&type=match&match=15

Current Leaderboard:
1) The n00b Avenger - 700.74
2) supdawg - 699.69
3) King Morgoth - 697.45
4) Haste2 - 696.02
5) Master Moltar - 695.58
5) charmander6000 - 695.58

The top part of the leaderboard remains unchanged today, but we have some interesting developments at the bottom. Haste2 moves up one spot to fourth while Moltar moves down to fifth. In some kind of weird coincidence, after being tied with creativename for 8th yesterday, analysis guy charmander has moved up into a tie for fifth with Moltar today.

Top Team Scores:
1) mvp's - 97.66 (ps2rulezzz: +49.07 / basmeyer42: +48.59)
2) We Love Milli Vanilli - 96.74 (Radix: +48.53 / andylt: +48.21)
3) SPO*N - 96.21 (Weird Kirby Dude11: +47.73 / ActJef1077: +48.48)
4) We Love t.A.T.u - 95.42 (MMXcalibur: +46.49 / supdawg: +48.93)
5) T-REX - 95.35 (Team Rocket Elite: +48.07 / Xcarvengerx: +47.28)

The former champions Team mvp's make some noise today with the top team score. Team We Love Milli Vanilli (Radix and andy) get second, their second top 5 of the contest. Team SPO*N (Wierd Kirby Dude and ActJef) is third - they've been third three times this contest, with no other top 5 spots. Team We Love t.A.T.u (MMX and supdawg) makes the top 5 for the second day in a row. Finally, team T-REX is fifth, and like Team SPO*N all three of their top 5's this contest have been in the same position.

Complete Team Match Ranking:

Team Leaderboard:
1) Team Predestined Divination (creativename / Ngamer64) - 1389.01
2) Team We Used To Be Good? (Kaxon / King Morgoth) - 1385.77
3) Team Rage of Warcraft (War13104 / DSRage) - 1381.60
4) Team Drunkadelict Armadillos (Haste2 / Dekar TKB) - 1380.07
5) Team Big Black Wangs (Master Moltar / Explicit Content) - 1379.98

Team Predestined Divination's reign of terror continues as the top three spots remain unchanged. They've been in first 11 out of 15 days so far this contest. Teams We Used To Be Good? and Rage of Warcraft are still in 2nd and 3rd. Team Drunkadelict Armadillos moves up to 4th and swaps places with Team Big Black Wangs.

Shoot, if I'd only flopped HK for Lloyd, I could be on the hunt for a perfect right now. It would be...

Jak to rise 0.16%
Zero to rise 0.69%
HK to fall 0.21%
Lloyd to fall 0.59%

Stupid Lloyd and his stupid not having any Day Vote.

Say, has anyone called even called one character perfectly yet this season? Maybe I could still pull that off with Jak, if he takes a night tumble after this fast rise he's on.

I shouldn't do this but... what's with all the high Luigi picks? Even if you don't put much stock in last year, he's never been worth much more than 30%. Mudkip has every reason to at least match Bidoof, who's came out right around the fodder line based on his result. And why should Luigi be able to SFF a Pokemon badly when neither Bowser nor Link could manage it? And then Meta Knight wowed us all just last week, with most people agreeing that his cool look and many Brawl updates helped give him an edge. Yet Pit, who's been featured on the Brawl site just as often, and looks awesome, is getting picked to barely get into the teens. And then there's Tingle, who already proved himself in a Contest setting. Granted, his 17% value was based of Sora, who always sends plenty of anti-votes his opponent's way, but I still say being associated with Zelda is enough to keep you from completely rolling over and dying in this format.

I guess the idea is what with so much Nintendo, the strongest N representative will SFF his way to a bigger win than his straight up value dictates. But after it didn't work for Bowser, and we've overestimated nearly every other #1... Oh wait, forgot about Fox. Yeah, I guess Luigi could pull a mini-Fox... but eh, I don't see it.

Bowser didn't dominate like Fox since there was a (strong) non-Nintendo character present. That is all. If Luigi was in Fox's place, he woulda gotten 50+%. This pack is probably weaker than Fox's pack of Nintendo characters, though Mudkip should resist the SFF.

1) Brawl hype didn't do much for Wario. Kid Icarus is practically unknown on its own.
2) Tingle is noticeably weaker than Falcon at best (while Luigi is a good deal stronger than Fox); not only Sora anti-votes but a possible over-performance by Sora on Mega Man.
3) I agree with you on Mudkip.

Ehh, not sure it's fair to discredit Brawl helping Wario, given that he was unfortunate in having to play one of the best-loved and most-used characters in both SSB and Melee, who had been announced on-site and appeared in many updates, and who topped it off by looking great in his pic. Pit should have some hype, plus he looks great, plus he's been all over the site whereas Luigi has yet to be announced or appear in any media. It's a given he'll be there of course, but I just think that for the moment, Pit's Brawl boost won't be squashed nearly as easily as was Wario's.

Match # 16 Results
Zero 39.56%
HK-47 21.30%
Lloyd Irving 20.22%
Jak 18.92%

As expected, Zero won today with ease. The bottom three were all pretty close in percentage, but for most of the match it was clear what order they'd finish in. The consensus predictions were HK-47 19.43%, Jak 18.34%, Lloyd Irving 20.29%, and Zero 42.04%. The average score was 46.64 points.

Best Five Picks:
1) MegatokyoEd - HK-47 20.00% - Jak 20.00% - Lloyd 20.00% - Zero 40.00% (+49.24)
1) AmazingKirby - HK-47 20.00% - Jak 20.00% - Lloyd 20.00% - Zero 40.00% (+49.24)
1) basmeyer42 - HK-47 20.00% - Jak 20.00% - Lloyd 20.00% - Zero 40.00% (+49.24)
4) Ngamer64 - HK-47 19.92% - Jak 18.70% - Lloyd 21.50% - Zero 39.88% (+49.20)
5) Seginustemple - HK-47 21.29% - Jak 18.29% - Lloyd 21.83% - Zero 38.59% (+49.19)

We have a first for this contest - a three way tie for the top prediction where all three people actually made the same pick! It has to be one of the most boring possible predictions too, a 20/20/20/40 split. MegatokyoEd, AmazingKirby, and basmeyer are the three people with at pick. Ngamer had the fourth best pick, while Seginustemple had the fifth best - both of them were within 0.05 of the top pick today.

Complete Match Ranking:

Current Leaderboard:
1) The n00b Avenger - 749.15
2) supdawg - 748.17
3) King Morgoth - 745.95
4) charmander6000 - 744.16
5) Ngamer64 - 744.13

Once again the top 3 are unchanged. The n00b Avenger hits his 11th straight day in first, which ties for tenth-longest all-time streak (with three other people). Charmander continues climbing the ranks today and moves into fourth. He's not tied with anyone this time, although he only missed tieing with fifth place Ngamer by 0.03 points. Ngamer jumps from 9th to 5th today with his #4 prediction.

5) We Used To Be Good? - 96.98 (Kaxon: +48.48 / King Morgoth: +48.50)

...And the rich get richer. Our top 3 teams in the standings all had top 5 scores today. Overall leaders Predestined Divination had the best one, followed by #3 team Rage of Warcraft. #2 team We Used To Be Good? lost ground by "only" getting fifth. The Amazing Question Marks got third, making some progress on their bid to return to the leaderboard - this is their 4th top five of the season. Team mvp's also got their fourth top 5 of the season with the 4th best score.

Complete Team Match Ranking:

4) Team Big Black Wangs (Master Moltar / Explicit Content) - 1474.71
5) Team Drunkadelict Armadillos (Haste2 / Dekar TKB) - 1473.68

The top three spots remain unchanged (for the fifth day in a row). Team Big Black Wangs moves up to fourth and swaps places with Team Drunkadelict Armadillos... which returns the leaderboard to exactly how it was 2 days ago. (Team Better Bettors and Team Happy Happyists also trade places in 6th and 7th for the second day in a row).

Bad news is that he was dead. Good news is that he's been expecting it for a while now. He died 1.5 years into an illness with a 2 year average life expectancy. It wasn't painful, and he wrote out the plot to the last book (but not the full text, so his family plans to finish writing it and publish it)

1 ) 3014 votes separated 2nd from 4th today. Will we get a match where the last character comes even closer to moving on by the end of the round? by the end of the contest?
Without looking over the bracket too much, no. This was the perfect setup for it - most matches have extreme fodder or SFF, etc.

2 ) Who's the strongest newcomer in your opinion?
Marcus. I just saw Gears of War is the highest selling XBox360 game...

3 ) The most impressive?
Is Fox really new? That was impressive, but I bet he was in a much older contest.

4 ) Rank the Noble Niners according to their Round 1 matches: (Suggested by Ngamer)
Mega Man : 50.49% on Arthas, Diablo & KOS-MOS
Samus : 51.75% on Axel, Frog & Kerrigan
Cloud : 61.24% on Jill, Ocelot & Zolomy
Sephiroth : 55.23% on CATS, MK & Peach

5 ) Star(s) of the first half of round 1?

6 ) Turd(s) of the first half of round 1?
Nintendo fodder. Where's the nintendo love? Peach, etc.

1 ) 3014 votes separated 2nd from 4th today. Will we get a match where the last character comes even closer to moving on by the end of the round? by the end of the contest?
Probably not... Lara/Daxter/Wesker has a chance of being close, maybe. I doubt any later matches will get that close, either, but who knows?

2 ) Who's the strongest newcomer in your opinion?
Link. Oh, wait, newcomer. So far, it's looking to be Mewtwo. Include the latter half... yeah, I'll still say Mewtwo.

3 ) The most impressive?
Mudkip... sheesh. Pokemon aside, I'll go with... maybe Fox McCloud?

4 ) Rank the Noble Niners according to their Round 1 matches: (Suggested by Ngamer)
Mega Man : 50.49% on Arthas, Diablo & KOS-MOS

Link : 70.50% on Agent J, Bidoof & Edgey
Crono : 48.18% on Sam Fisher, Simon Belmont & Raiden

I'll just rank them according to retro-expectations. Cloud > Mega Man > Link > Samus > Crono > Mario > Sephiroth .

5 ) Star(s) of the first half of round 1?
All the Pokemon, Fox McCloud, Crash Bandicoot, Pyramid Head, Meta Knight...

6 ) Turd(s) of the first half of round 1?
Agent J, Magus, Midna, Zelos, Raiden, Edgeworth, CATS

The question didn't say it had to be for the first half there... and the question didn't explicitly say it had to be a newcomer. =P To give you the answer you're looking for Xuxon, I'll say Bidoof.

Ahhh damnit I didn't get my pick in for today's match. It's probably too much to ask to just match my pick to my teammate's isn't it? Doesn't hurt to ask... I completely understand if you don't 'cause I should have got that pick in on time.

1 ) 3014 votes separated 2nd from 4th today. Will we get a match where the last character comes even closer to moving on by the end of the round? by the end of the contest?

Yes, Alucard/Ness/Liquid/Zidane looks very possible.

2 ) Who's the strongest newcomer in your opinion?

Mewtwo, as Fox has been in 2 contests before.

3 ) The most impressive?

Mewtwo again.

Mario : 57.91% on Big Boss, Pac-Man & Wander
Link : 70.50% on Agent J, Bidoof & Edgey
Crono : 48.18% on Sam Fisher, Simon Belmont & Raiden

In order of meeting expectations:

Megaman > Samus >> Cloud > Mario > Crono >> Link >> Sephiroth

5 ) Star(s) of the first half of round 1?

Phoenix Wright, Sam Fisher, the Pokemon, Vincent, Meta-Knight, Fox, Crash Bandicoot, Pyramid Head, Tom Nook, Arthas

6 ) Turd(s) of the first half of round 1?

Zelos, Kefka, Vaan, Sephiroth, Midna, Zelda, Tingle

1 ) 3014 votes separated 2nd from 4th today. Will we get a match where the last character comes even closer to moving on by the end of the round? by the end of the contest?
On later rounds, there are a few matches that everyone looks very close to each other, so I expect for this to happen but not on the rest of this round, and doubt that it happens on Round 2 as well.

2 ) Who's the strongest newcomer in your opinion?
Marcus?

3 ) The most impressive?
This one goes to Mewtwo easily. Though the pokemons have done to good for liking so far.

4 ) Rank the Noble Niners according to their Round 1 matches: (Suggested by Ngamer)

Match # 17 Results
Luigi 45.96%
Mudkip 27.71%
Pit 18.72%
Tingle 7.62%

For the third time this contest a pokemon impressed us today - it shouldn't be surprising anymore, but Mudkip exceeded expectations by more than 8%. Most of the difference came at the expense of Tingle, who proved himself to be the weak bastard everyone expected him to be last year. Luigi and Pit were both very close to expectations. The consensus predictions were Luigi 47.33%, Mudkip 19.66%, Pit 17.66%, and Tingle 15.13%. The average score was low for this contest, 43.84 points.

Best Five Picks:
1) Lieutenant Kettch - Luigi 44.47% - Mudkip 29.08% - Pit 15.96% - Tingle 10.49% (+47.87)
2) GoldSlime35 - Luigi 47.00% - Mudkip 23.00% - Pit 18.00% - Tingle 12.00% (+47.28)
3) Starion - Luigi 45.34% - Mudkip 22.64% - Pit 20.94% - Tingle 11.08% (+47.15)
4) Mega Mana - Luigi 40.00% - Mudkip 30.00% - Pit 20.00% - Tingle 10.00% (+47.02)
5) Kaxon - Luigi 46.15% - Mudkip 23.52% - Pit 16.61% - Tingle 13.72% (+46.85)

Lieutenant Kettch continues to make his mark on the contest, making the best prediction today, mostly because he had Tingle very low and Mudkip very high. Goldslime, no stranger to the top 5, gets second - this is his 28th lifetime top 5. Starion is third and Mega Mana is fourth - this is the third time in the top 5 this contest for each of them. In fifth we have someone who is a stranger to the top 5, me. I was last up there on match #17 of the series contest, or exactly two contests ago. Today's pick catapults my efficiency rating all the way up to 0.488.

3) Lieutenant Kettch - 790.24
4) charmander6000 - 790.11
5) Ngamer64 - 789.54

OMG shakeup!! Things finally get exciting on the leaderboard. The n00b Avenger drops out of first for the first time since day 5, failing to extend his streak to 12 days. Supdawg, who lead on day 5, has managed to reclaim the lead by a precarious 0.12 points. Lieutenant Kettch resumes his climb, this time jumping 6 spots into third overall. Charmander and Ngamer remain in fourth and fifth for the second day in a row, while King Morgoth drops off the leaderboard (by only 0.01 points!) to 6th.

Yeah I knew he had a terminal illness, and I actually checked his wiki a couple times in the past year just to make sure he was alive, but that still caught me by surprise.

I was surprised and sad when I heard about it on Sunday night. I only saw him in person once (at Comicon 2005), but he had a pretty big impact on my life over the past 10 years.

Sorry, we can't do that, although in the team contest you do get points based on your partner's score. But for the solo contest it's a 0 if you don't post a prediction.
