Hey Morgantown,

I'm not going to able to get on AIM until a while after 1am EST, but I've got the rest of the rankings already set and would like to post the topic soon after midnight if possible. Think you could send the stats on these final four matches to ngamer@gmail.com soon after this Sonic result goes final?

Thanks pal!

Your friend,
~Ng

And wow, despite the fact that I keep placing in the top 20, I cannot pass my teammate because he keeps placing even higher than me.

CAN'T LET YOU DO THAT STAR FOX

But wow, we're really plowing through things. How about instead of a 2nd/3rd finale we go for 1st/2nd? Me getting the first of course. =P

The 40% Mega Man picks have me a touch confused... Not that he did awful last round, but still, that was only 50% of the vote against the Blizzard fanbase + a semi-cult RPG fanbase. Now he's got that same RPG section there, but with Blizzard replaced by Nintendo and Sega, and he's still being picked to shed only 10% or less? Even assuming some SFF and Team Sonic being a bit of a letdown thus far, that's a tad too hopeful for MM as I see it.

One of the things that interests me most about the Oracle is comparing actual results to consensus expectations, but consensus expectations for this contest don't appear to be on the site anywhere. Any chance of fixing that in the near future?

They're on the site, but the formula is broken for this Contest and KM hasn't had a chance to fix it yet. If you look at a character's page, like Frog for example, you see

http://oraclechallenge.com/profiles.php?type=competitors&id=165

60% or so.

That being said, assuming the formula could be fixed, I do agree that it's one of the most interesting stats, and one I wish we could include on every match results page. If it were up to me I'd place it right underneath where you currently see in green

Duke Nukem 30.18% Gordon Freeman 29.57% Guybrush 11.49% Ike 28.76% 45.61

So a red line with every character's name again, and then the % next to them would be the avg we gave them.

Hah, I just got a perfect PoP prediction. Has even one character been perfectly predicted yet this contest?

And ugh... I haven't looked yet, but I forgot to come up with a reasonable prediction for today, rather than off-the-top-of-my-head safety. Hopefully my gut did well.

Match # 32 Results
Sonic the Hedgehog 39.64%
Sub-Zero 32.89%
The Prince of Persia 17.97%
Viewtiful Joe 9.50%

Sonic looked bad today, while Sub-Zero impressed us once again, exceeding expectations by more than 7%. The consensus predictions were Sonic - 44.21%; Sub-Zero - 25.76%; PoP - 17.69%; Joe - 12.42%. The average score was 45.71 points.

Best Five Picks:
1) Jmast7 - Sonic 40.40% - Sub-Zero 31.60% - PoP 16.40% - Joe 8.60% (+48.87)
2) Lady Ashe - Sonic 40.00% - Sub-Zero 30.00% - PoP 20.00% - Joe 10.00% (+48.55)
2) AlecTrevelyan006 - Sonic 40.00% - Sub-Zero 30.00% - PoP 20.00% - Joe 10.00% (+48.55)
4) Aprosenf - Sonic 41.29% - Sub-Zero 29.65% - PoP 18.72% - Joe 10.34% (+48.38)
4) Luster Soldier - Sonic 42.33% - Sub-Zero 29.81% - PoP 18.52% - Joe 9.34% (+48.38)

Jmast is on a roll! Today he gets the top pick for the second time in three days. Lady Ashe is doing much better now that he's making his predictions on time; he's tied for second today with AlecTravelyan. There's a second tie in the top 5 between Aprosenf and Luster Soldier in fourth place - this is Apro's second top 5 of the contest. It's only Luster's first top 5 this year; his powers may have been weaked somehow. I hope he hasn't gone through with his plan to produced his own alcohol with reactions he learned in chemistry, but that would be one possible explanation.

Hah, I just got a perfect PoP prediction. Has even one character been perfectly predicted yet this contest?

Good question. I didn't know until just now, but we've actually had 6. I think that's not too surprising; the rate should be higher than in a normal contest since there are more characters you have a chance to predict perfectly, while predicting one character perfectly here probably isn't much different from predicting one perfectly in a normal match.

Perfect character predictions so far:
Gaddswell - Ratchet - 14.61%
RockMFR5 - Balthier - 33.00%
RPGLord95 - Balthier - 33.00%
Jmast7 - Balthier - 33.00%
XcarvengerX - Haseo - 9.29%
Xuxon - Prince of Persia - 17.97%

I didn't notice Balthier ended on a whole number percent or I wouldn't have even bothered asking. Not surprised either way, though, since it should be a lot more likely (4x in theory, maybe slightly less because of the inherent unpredictability) than a normal contest.

1) Most shocking result so far?

Hmm, probably Duke > Gordon for me. The only other match I only got 1 point on was Alucard > Liquid and that was expected to be close.

2) Most impressive character so far?

All hail the Chief!

3) Biggest disappointment?

Hmmm, probably Balthier for me. I was expecting some good things out of him, and then he goes and loses to Ada. Blargh.

4) Weakest character to advance?

so i herd u liek bidoofz

5) Strongest character to lose in Round 1?

This one's pretty tough. I'm gonna go ahead and say Mewtwo.

6) Who's the contest dark horse at this point?

Believe.

Easy set of questions for today....
1) Most shocking result so far?

Probably Gordon losing to Duke actually. I would have given Gordon a small chance of losing to Ike, but I never dreamed he'd lose to Duke Nukem.

Ryu demolishing Riku and Ada beating Balthier were the other biggest surprises, I think.

2) Most impressive character so far?

Probably Link, breaking 70% in this format is pretty crazy.

3) Biggest disappointment?

Maybe Raiden... although he advanced, barely beating Sam Fisher was not quite what we were hoping to see from him.

Oh, but I forgot about Midna. She takes it easily over Raiden and Balthier.

4) Weakest character to advance?

I'll go with Wario. I don't like him, and even if he's not really the weakest, he's going to look pretty damn bad in round 2. =)

5) Strongest character to lose in Round 1?

Rikku. I think this one's pretty clear actually.

6) Who's the contest dark horse at this point?

I'm going to say good old Ryu. After his showing in round 1, he has a good chance to make it to round 3. If Auron suffers a moderate amount of LFF from Cloud, Ryu could very well make it to round 4, which I think is a lot better than anyone expected.

1) Most shocking result so far?

Ryu Hayabusa > Riku + Roxas

2) Most impressive character so far?

Master Chief

3) Biggest disappointment?

Riku

4) Weakest character to advance?

Uh... Balthier?

5) Strongest character to lose in Round 1?

Mewtwo, by a lot. After that... Ness?

6) Who's the contest dark horse at this point?

Ryu to the semi-finals!

Thanks for the mail KM! However... I still need the numbers from the Squall, Sora, and Duke matches! As you'll recall we only went through Ryu's win last night.

And now for some thoughts. This is kind of unfair since I've already run the numbers on these results and all my answers will be x-stat based, but oh well!

1) Most shocking result so far?

In terms of gut-reaction, it had to be clicking in a vote for L-Block thinking "this could have been an awesome upset, but no way he can top Laharl with THIS crappy picture" and instead seeing him out in front... of Kirby! And holding! But the rest of the way Kirby gained and L dropped to the point where it wasn't that crazy, statistically.

Going by stats, I'd say the shocker has to be Pika jumping from bad fodder to Kirby-level respectable midcarder in that win over Tidus. Though Duke and Ryu H utterly defying their old values (or Freeman and Riku collapsing, if you'd rather) can't be far behind.

2) Most impressive character so far?

Vincent and Subby blew away my predictions and impressed me just about to death, but this award has to go to the Chief. This was the round where he was supposed to be hampered by the GTA casual appeal and lack of H3's release, and instead he puts up a number like THAT? Even accounting for Yuna's female bracket inflation, it's still incredible.

3) Biggest disappointment?

I was riding the Midna bandwagon for a while, but Balthier's pathetic showing topped it by a mile, and now after seeing how astoundingly well Mortal Kombat holds up in this format, Balt tops her by two miles! But I don't want to let Magus off the hook too easily, so dishonorable mention there - how do you let a fourpack that ugly hold you down to near 30%? That was really disgusting.

4) Weakest character to advance?

Gut reaction is it's got to be Balthier, checking the stats... confirms that opinion! The other weakest of the weak include Riku, Vergil, HK, Bidoof, and KOS-MOS.

5) Strongest character to lose in Round 1?

Gut reaction I'd have gone Mewtwo, but checking the stats reminds me that I'd forgotten how Rikku actually gave Knux a run for his money for a while there. Rikku's the strongest, and pretty easily, and the others with showings good enough that they'd have advanced in many other packs are Axel, Prince of Persia, Ness, and Bomberman.

6) Who's the contest dark horse at this point?

Well MC's the guy alot of us least-respected who's looking to make the deepest run, but between H3 and that Yuna pounding it's hard to get behind him as either an underdog or a darkhorse. Ryu's an OK choice with the way fighters have continued to to impress, but I'm going to have to go with Pikachu for this award.

His outright, and frankly easy, victory over Tidus combined with Vivi's underwhelming showing on Leon should make the second round 2nd place his to lose. After that we've got Leon being hurt by the presence of Ada, and both of THEM being hurt by the presence of fellow Capcom icon Dante. There's no telling how crucial having a solid Pokemon fanbase backing you could end up being in a situation that wacky. His run would be sure to end after that, but still, earning your way into a fourpack with Master Chief on steroids, Ganon, and Dante would be an amazing accomplishment for a former 15%er.

Thanks for the mail KM! However... I still need the numbers from the Squall, Sora, and Duke matches! As you'll recall we only went through Ryu's win last night.

Sorry about that, for some reason I was sure you had Squall, Sora and Duke. Oh well, sent now....
Can't wait to see how you adjusted those...

And now...the questions....
1) Most shocking result so far?
There are so many to choose from....
Ada winning her 4-pack without sweating was kinda shocking but it's something that could happen. I'll have to make this a 3-way tie between results that have left me outright speechless...:
L-Block looking like a solid midcarder was something even my bracket didn't expect. Is L-Block's face shot his topmost square or something?
Ryu H > Riku + Roxas. Give me all the SFF and LFF you want, I'm not trying to explain that one...
Duke Nukem winning a match. Alright, his 4-pack was weak as all. And alright GFNW. But how could he ever win a match?

2) Most impressive character so far?
Master Chief looked like he could use Halo 3 to make it even farther than people thought. L-Block and those two poke friends made the other joke characters look outright silly. Ryu H has shown the potential to slide by a few more matches. But personally I'll have to hand it to our favorite yellow rat... Pika is the one I never saw coming out of them all...

3) Biggest disappointment?
I never rode on Midna's bandwagon and Sub-Zero's performance doesn,t make her look so bad. On the other hand, getting humiliated by Ada Wong is not something to be proud of. Here Balthier, take your shamestick!

4) Weakest character to advance?
Balthier probably...but frankly, Gordon, Duke and Vergil could all be contenders...

5) Strongest character to lose in Round 1?
I'd take Mewtwo over Rikku and they're the only two even in contention...

6) Who's the contest dark horse at this point?
This is where bracket positioning comes into play. Sub-Zero and Ryu H could find a way to go farther than expected but it'd be tough for them to really do some damage. Ryu could see SFF opening him a path but it's a longshot. The one real dark horse here is Pikachu. Thanks to probably the weakest division out there he could very well dodge SFF on his way to Round 4...

1) Most shocking result so far?

Duke in first. Every other result I can at least understand. Duke having any strength remaining, nevermind enough to beat a decently strong looking Gordon who's never gotten less than 36% in a poll? That blindsided me. Honorable mention to Pikachu>Tidus.

2) Most impressive character so far?

Master Chief. I expected him to make the elite 8, but even I was surprised as how well he did. Honorable mention to Fox.

3) Biggest disappointment?

Gordon Freeman. It's freaking Duke Nukem. Dishonorable mentions to Wario and Tidus.

4) Weakest character to advance?

Thinking captain Derp. Dishonorable mention to...Uh...Amaterasu?

5) Strongest character to lose in Round 1?

Rikku, followed by Mewtwo. Also, honorable mention to Tommy Vercetti, who I think just got SFFed into oblivion in his match.

6) Who's the contest dark horse at this point?

Sub-Zero. I'm the only one in the Guru contest to have Subby beating out the Square characters in round three, and the last match makes it look a lot better than it did at first. Honorable mention to Pikachu.

1) Most shocking result so far?
The most jaw-dropping moment for me was checking the poll and seeing (40 minutes in)...
Bomberman - 23.04%
Crash Bandicoot - 15.90%
Phoenix Wright - 29.82%
Magus - 31.23%

As for... most shocking FINAL result... I'll say... Ryu Hayabusa/Riku/Roxas/Haseo. I still have a hard time getting over the fact that Hayabusa could probably beat Riku by a good margin.

2) Most impressive character so far?
Link! Or Master Chief, or maybe Sub-Zero. Too many options here.

3) Biggest disappointment?
I gotta give that to Magus. He's expected to barely 60/40 Crash Bandicoot now. Horrible. Honorable mention goes to Balthier.

4) Weakest character to advance?
Weakest to advance... that's gotta be... Bidoof. Or Maybe Vergil.

5) Strongest character to lose in Round 1?
Mewtwo, closely followed by Rikku.

6) Who's the contest dark horse at this point?
Gotta be L-Block. Maybe Pikachu, as well. Or perhaps Sub-Zero. At least, those are guys who can potentially go far. Oh, yeah, and maybe Ryu.

Sadly, Frog looks like he's going to get wrecked here. Scorpion will run away with this. I was planning to go with blatant Frog fanboyism with my Oracle pick here and have him winning by .02 points, but I decided against it. I just can't see him winning.

This pack is tougher than his 1st round pack so I don't see how he's able to match his percent there. Surprisingly people actually expect him to do better this round. The only thing I could think of that could make Frog do better is some sort of Square/RPG LFF with Axel? I don't think those two would overlap much though.

Also Pikachu beating out Vivi wold be the worst, most contemptible result these contests have ever seen.

The fact that it couldn't happen if Tidus weren't in there is bad enough

Anyway I think Sub-Zero is a bigger dark horse than Pikachu, because at this point I think he's actually more likely than not to get past Squall due to LFF. Pikachu is still unlikely to advance that far. I still think Vivi can beat him (especially if he SFFs Tidus into oblivion, which is not impossible).

Leach Fanbase Factor. It's the same thing as SFF really, except fanbase leaching can affect both characters in a format like this. Like say for instance the result in Squall's match. Is Akuma REALLY worth 23.74% on Base Link, as those stats imply? Probably not. And has Squall fallen to a mere 32.09%, and has Aeris tumbled 10 points to only 25.65%? Certainly not. But since those two "leached" off each other and had to split the Square vote, they both end up looking more or less like chumps, while others in the poll earned higher percentages than they should have.

1) Most shocking result so far?
Probably L-Block doing way better than anyone expected or the pokemons recking our predictions. The dominance of MGS characters was a bit shocking at first, too.

2) Most impressive character so far?
Vincent looked like a beast, and so did Master Chief. Of the Noble Niners, I liked how Cloud did.

3) Biggest disappointment?
Balthier, Midna, Gordon, Chrono Trigger's characters, Zero..

4) Weakest character to advance?
Wario, Bidoof, Balthier

5) Strongest character to lose in Round 1?
Mewtwo or Rikku.

6) Who's the contest dark horse at this point?
Marcus Fenix or Pikachu (how much I hate to say that)

Match # 33 Results
Mega Man 37.73%
Yoshi 28.24%
Knuckles the Echidna 20.27%
KOS-MOS 13.75%

Today was one of the most predictable matches of the contest... Yoshi exceeded expectations by 2.09%, which was the biggest deviation for any of the characters. Mega Man and KOS-MOS were both within 1% of expectations. The consensus predictions were Mega Man - 37.10%; Yoshi - 26.15%; Knuckles - 22.42%; KOS-MOS - 14.33%. The average score was a high 47.64 points.

Best Five Picks:
1) Lady Ashe - Knuckles 20.00% - KOS-MOS 15.00% - MM 37.50% - Yoshi 27.50% (+49.37)
2) Xcarvengerx - Knuckles 21.18% - KOS-MOS 12.94% - MM 38.11% - Yoshi 27.77% (+49.35)
3) Starion - Knuckles 20.75% - KOS-MOS 14.27% - MM 36.23% - Yoshi 27.75% (+49.25)
4) kawaiifan - Knuckles 20.00% - KOS-MOS 15.00% - MM 38.00% - Yoshi 27.00% (+49.24)
5) Sephirot1 Returns - Knuckles 21.99% - KOS-MOS 13.68% - MM 37.23% - Yoshi 27.10% (+49.14)

Lady Ashe is on fire! Today he has the best prediction after having the second best yesterday. XcarvengerX gets his first top 5 of the contest (but not his first top 5 ever) with a second place pick. Starion gets his 7th top 5 of the contest, but it's been a while since his last one... this one puts him barely back on pace to break Darkash's record of 12 in one contest. The Oracle Queen reappears with a fourth place pick (her 22nd lifetime), followed by Sephirot1 Returns with the #5 prediction.

Current Leaderboard:
1) The n00b Avenger - 1539.05
2) creativename - 1533.19
3) Master Moltar - 1532.14
4) DSRage - 1530.62
5) supdawg - 1529.85

No changes at all in the leaderboard today. However, there's some excitement in the top 10 - kawaiifan climbs three spots today to return to the top 10, where she's finished 5 previous times. The top 10 is extremely stacked right now; it includes two former champions (Haste2 and kawaiifan), two former second place finishers (n00b Avenger and Master Moltar), three of the five statistically best predictors in Oracle history (kawaii, creativename, and Ngamer), one of the best new competitors from 2006 (DSRage), and a guy who had an impressive run of his own in the Villains contest (MegatokyoEd).

Top Team Scores:
1) Helmasaur King - 97.76 (Xuxon: +49.01 / GrapefruitKing: +48.75)
2) free shipping, can't beat that! - 97.02 (cyko: +48.51 / ad00: +48.51)
3) Vector Industries - 97.01 (Lady Ashe: +49.37 / CrimsonOcean: +0.00)
4) The Amazing Question Marks - 96.91 (AmazingKirby: +48.38 / entropyx: +48.53)
5) Dartboard - 96.89 (Starion: +49.25 / MoogleKupo141: +0.00)

Team Helmasaur King takes yesterday's best Team pick by a wide margin for their 4th Top 5 of the contest. I don't know if I can beat free shipping but cyko and ad00 ride on tied scores to take 2nd and their first Top 5 of the contest, barely edging Lady Ashe's Vector Industries, good for a second straight solo Team Top 5. The Amazing Question Marks take their 7th Top 5 of the year in 4th while Team Dartboard ride on Starion's great pick to 5th place.

Complete Team Match Ranking:

Team Leaderboard:
1) Team Predestined Divination (creativename / Ngamer64) - 3061.05
2) Team Rage of Warcraft (War13104 / DSRage) - 3051.44
3) Team mvp's (ps2rulezzz / basmeyer42) - 3048.16
4) Team Big Black Wangs (Master Moltar / Explicit Content) - 3046.17
5) Team OH IT'S NESS (Ness26 / TheKnightOfNee) - 3043.67

Nothing to see here. Heck nobody moved in the Top 12. All teams in the Top 10 scored between 95.17 and 96.83 so even the gaps stayed pretty much the same. It's good to note that Team Predestined Divination have now spent 30 straight days on the leaderboard...

Indeed. I wish we could get her to post here again, but she doesn't seem interested.

4) Weakest character to advance?

1) Most shocking result so far?
L-Block getting 30%.
2) Most impressive character so far?
Ada Wong. Even if it was against weak opponents 40% is pretty good for her.
3) Biggest disappointment?
Kirby. Come on now, you should be getting more than that.
4) Weakest character to advance?
Tough to say. Maybe Amaterasu. I would say Bidoof but he'd probably get Pokemon/joke support over Amaterasu and 15% on Link isn't too bad.
5) Strongest character to lose in Round 1?
Probably Mewtwo.
6) Who's the contest dark horse at this point?
Master Chief. That unwavering support he gets could push him to big things.

Match # 34 Results
Samus Aran 45.96%
Scorpion 24.01%
Frog 17.45%
Midna 12.57%

No surprises today - Samus won easily, and Scorpion was comfortably ahead of Frog for second place. The consensus predictions were: Samus - 43.05%; Scorpion - 23.08%; Frog - 19.88%; Midna - 14.29%. The average score was 47.05.

Best Five Picks:
1) Haste2 - Frog 17.50% - Midna 13.00% - Samus 45.50% - Scorpion 24.00% (+49.76)
2) RockMFR 5 - Frog 18.00% - Midna 12.00% - Samus 46.00% - Scorpion 24.00% (+49.70)
3) kawaiifan - Frog 18.00% - Midna 13.00% - Samus 45.00% - Scorpion 24.00% (+49.51)
4) Kaxon - Frog 17.51% - Midna 13.61% - Samus 45.63% - Scorpion 23.25% (+49.45)
5) smitelf - Frog 16.50% - Midna 13.68% - Samus 45.79% - Scorpion 24.03% (+49.43)

When Haste2 decides to make a good pick, he doesn't mess around - this is his third #1 prediction of the contest. It's also his 11th top pick all time and his 33rd top 5. In addition, it's the best prediction of the contest so far at 49.76 points.

The top 5 was very high scoring today overall - RockMFR had the second best pick today, with 49.70 points, which would have been the best score of the contest before Haste2's 49.76. Kawaiifan made the top 5 for the second day in a row, and Kaxon also made the top 5 for the second time this contest (something I haven't done since 2004). Both of us had scores that were in the top 10 for the whole contest. Smitelf got her first top 5 of the contest (although she's been near the top of the standings for quite a while) with the 12th best prediction of the contest.

With kawaii in 3rd, Kax in 4th, and King Morgoth in 6th, this has to be the best day for the k-crew since sc2k4. =)

Complete Match Ranking:

Current Leaderboard:
1) The n00b Avenger - 1587.89
2) creativename - 1581.76
3) Haste2 - 1579.22
4) DSRage - 1578.85
5) Master Moltar - 1578.83

The n00b Avenger and creativename hold on to the top two spots today. Haste2's awesome prediction moves him back onto the leaderboard and up to third place, while Master Moltar drops two spots to fifth. DSRage is still in fourth (0.02 ahead of Moltar). Smitelf's strong prediction moves her into sixth place and less than half a point away from the leaderboard, while kawaii's moves her up to 8th. The race is close; places 3-9 are separated by exactly two points.
