They added up to 112.5% because they're x-stats values. If you take those numbers, and work your formula on them, you get the percentages of the actual match-up.

Also, Pleasantly surprised that I didn't drop nearly as much as I thought I would. Not in a bad spot overall I don't think.

Ahhh, I see. That's what you meant by reverse - he was obtaining the strength values. That's pretty neat. Thanks for explaining.

creative, those are not predicted results. They are using the results and I'm working BACKWARDS to "create" the x-stats (in relation to 2K3 Link) for each character, and seeing how they compare to the x-stats we'd expect.

I'll be doing the same thing again for yesterday's match in a little bit. ;)

Latest 4-way calculator tests:

Morgoth:
Mega Man - 40%
KOS-MOS - 19.75%
Arthas - 17.25%
Diablo - 17.25%

I tried my best to optimize Mega Man and KOS-MOS here, while Arthas and Diablo have shown to split the fanbase...

creative:
Mega Man -36.25%
KOS-MOS - 24.75%
Arthas - 23.75%
Diablo - 23.50%

Pretty reasonable x-stats, but all three losers seem sorta high... wouldn't you expect Arthas and Diablo to have SFF?

It's another tough call today... I'll say the winner here is Morgoth, as I figure there was some SFF between Arthas and Diablo.

Haste2's noobish linear method:
Mega Man - 38%
KOS-MOS - 20.25%
Arthas - 18.80%
Diablo - 17.75%

OMG I like mine the best... again.

Of course, that's merely by coincidence because of SFF, but it's the most reasonable values for everyone except Arthas, at least. KOS is a bit high there, but her and Diablo are too low in the others and Mega Man is too high.

I'm liking these results. I might not be more than 2% off my prediction on anything today. I've been doing pretty well so far because it's mostly involved characters I know the strengths of... but that predictability is coming to an end once we get to tomorrow, where I predict I'll start to tumble.

Yes but how will you implement it without making it too difficult for King Morgoth and company though? I personally think there should be a penalty for getting the positions wrong - 2 pts per wrong spot. You could even limit it to just the 1st and 2nd spots but that might be too much of a pain to program (plus it would get screwed by picks that have the same % for two or more characters).

Answer pretty much says it all. It's been enough of a pain to code everything and make sure it worked, the penalties would have made the scoring system a pain and there were too many exceptions to make it worth it. In an ideal world, we'd probably have some sort of penalty system but it wasn't (sadly) viable right now...

Match # 3 Results
Samus Aran 51.75%
Frog 18.64%
Axel 18.55%
Sarah Kerrigan 11.06%

A Morgoth update? Aw yeah! For those who thought about missing the match, Frog took an insurmountable lead, Axel fought back gaining himself an insurmountable lead of his own and Frog figured he'd finish the job instead of choking. Samus didn't really mind, she was getting over half the votes anyway. Our 176 predictions averaged 45.76 points and while 158 were right on with Samus>Frog, 13 others came really close to kickign their asses. The consensus was Samus - 53.28%, Frog - 21.15%, Axel - 14.94%, Kerrigan - 10.71%

Best Five Picks:
1) ps2rulezzz - Axel 17.50% - Frog 19.50% - Kerrigan 11.00% - Samus 52.00% (+49.44)
2) raytan7585 - Axel 18.64% - Frog 19.05% - Kerrigan 9.90% - Samus 52.41% (+49.42)
3) Heroic Viktor - Axel 17.00% - Frog 19.00% - Kerrigan 11.00% - Samus 53.00% (+49.19)
4) Haste2 - Axel 17.45% - Frog 20.45% - Kerrigan 10.55% - Samus 51.45% (+49.07)
4) StopPokingMe - Axel 18.03% - Frog 20.49% - Kerrigan 9.99% - Samus 51.49% (+49.07)

49 points meant a Top 5 appearance today. ps2 wins this one with his second TOp 5 in a row (20th all-time) barely edging raytan who grabs his 3rd Top 5 ever. The other three are used to being here as Heroix Viktor grabs his 23rd while Haste2 (30th) and StopPokingMe (28th) tie for 5th.

Awesome graph! It would be great to have something like that on our site... but that's far in the future, unless someone else wants to write it.

So that means someone with a better Samus > Axel > Frog > Sarah prediction than me will still score higher, even though I got the order right? Ugh....oh well....

I'm not sure if I see that as a problem. The point is to predict the percentage, not the winner, so it seems like someone who had Axel with 19, Frog with 18 should score better than someone who had Frog with 22, Axel with 15. Having a penalty does make things a little more exciting, it's true.

Gee, I was pretty off with Scorpion and Midna... but then again, most people were, I suppose.

The moment you've been waiting for... the 4-way poll calculator comparisons!

King Morgoth:
Samus - 45.75% on BL
Frog - 22.5%
Axel - 22.5%
Kerrigan - 14.25%

creativename:
Samus - 36%
Frog -24.25%
Axel - 24.25%
Kerrigan - 21%

Yeah, we can obviously see Morgoth's method is better here, as I was expecting. The formula will get destroyed whenever characters of significantly different strengths get blown out.

NewbHaste2's:
Samus - 43%
Frog - 22.75%
Axel - 22.75%
Kerrigan - 15.14%

It actually looks pretty good, unless you were expecting MP:C to do something massive.

As for Frog/Axel SFF... it looks like there wasn't much.

As I said, I usually like your numbers better than mine Haste but they're not relying on anything other than say common sense and instinct. I'd love to figure out a way to justify the thinking though!

And I'm not exactly surprised that mine are holding better in non-SFF matches, I already knew that my technique was going to be heavily affected by SFF (unlike creative's which in its construction implies some sort of "inherent SFF" by "reserving" sections of voters for the strongest character(s) if I could say that). It's always nice to see those comparaisons every day though!

Okay, continuing from last night, help me figure this out....

If you're able to give bonus points to the top 5 finishers, why can't you take penalty points away for picking the wrong order?

This is my first time in the Oracle, so I don't really know how the stats work.

You can ask anything and we'll do our best to answer as soon as possible. Bonus points are fossils of the early Oracle era (we're talking SC2k3 here) where solar thought it was a good idea to give bonus points to the Top 5 each day. By the end of the contest (or was the first week ever done?) it was generally agreed that it basically more or less rewarded luck which wasn't what was wanted. He kept them there, giving out a side "including Bonus points" rankings every few days. I've always kept them there as a tradition but never really bothered to add rankings including them since there didn't seem to be any demand for that...

As far as taking penalty points away, it's much (much much much) easier to just display bonus points if(rank<6) than ordering the result, then the predictions and writing situations for if(Char1 = CHar2){}elseif(Char 2 = Char 3){}elseif(Char 1 = Char 2 = Char 3){}elseif{}....

The change by itself would be possible but it would be awfully complicated to code and it would potentially slow down the loading times beyond reasonable measures on the more complicated pages...

does anyone have the original picks archived by any chance? I was just wondering if the pick on the site for me today is a mistake or if I was just on drugs lol. Because all of my matches add up exactly to 100 and today it adds up to 135.11% with Midna having a really high %, when I could have sworn I typed out 35 or something close to it. Probably a mistake on my part, but I'm just curious.

Hm, okay. Thanks for the answer.

Would it be possible to make rankings including such penalties just for fun after the contest is over?
