SC2k7 Oracle Challenge Discussion Topic

Kaxon hadn't fully updated the database with yesterday's picks, so when the site first came up tonight it registered as 0 points for KM.

Im Ngamer (11:32:28 PM): remind KM to make yesterday's pick!
Im Ngamer (11:32:49 PM): hopefully he can be fairly accurate with it now, for your team's sake!
GFKaxon (11:33:51 PM): Heh =)
I hadn't entered that page yet, I'm doing it now. I didn't realize some of yesterday's picks were on page 8.
Im Ngamer (11:34:10 PM): ah ok
Im Ngamer (11:34:40 PM): I was going to say, normally I'd be upset, but with the lead me and creative have, we can afford to spot you guys 24 hours here and there
Im Ngamer (11:34:47 PM): it's only sporting of us
GFKaxon (11:35:19 PM): Being ahead at the beginning is lucky... we'll see who's ahead of at the end of the contest. =)

Truly, this is the greatest rivalry since Ali-Frasier.

But seriously, the disappointing thing for me about yesterday is for the first time all season I felt sure I had that match pegged. Seph was basically a mortal lock for 60%, CATS' devoted fanbase would thrive in this format to net him a cool 13% or thereabouts, and Peach would take a decent majority of the tablescraps left for Nintendo. It seemed pretty much set in stone, didn't it? Yikes, did MK ever throw a monkey wrench into those plans... But what I'm pleased about is that even with me ending up with such a horrible performance, I still somehow managed to post an average score for the day. That gives me plenty of hope for the future, since I honestly can't picture myself failing too much harder than I just did. Then again, as soon as you think you have this format figured out, it seems to create another mystery...

As for today, what awesome work from my man Fox! Anyone trying to play this off as pure SFF is just being silly IMO; I've been saying for years he'd be a legit contest threat if we could just get him back into the field, and love seeing my thought process validated here today. Bring on Seph/Meta Knight!

Match # 9 Results
Sephiroth 55.23%
Meta Knight 18.20%
Princess Peach 15.35%
CATS 11.22%

This contest seems to have some kind of upset almost every day. Today it was Meta Knight beating Peach and CATS for second place. 117 predictors had Peach in second, vs 14 for CATS and only 10 for Meta Knight. Everyone had Sephiroth first. The consensus was CATS 11.79%, Meta Knight 12.25%, Princess Peach 17.71%, and Sephiroth 58.30%.

Best Five Picks:
1) WiggumFan267 - CATS 11.44% - M. Knight 20.23% - Princess Peach 15.10% - Sephiroth 53.23% (+48.87)
2) MoogleKupo141 - CATS 10.09% - M. Knight 16.21% - Princess Peach 19.30% - Sephiroth 54.40% (+48.02)
3) MegatokyoEd - CATS 12.00% - M. Knight 14.00% - Princess Peach 17.00% - Sephiroth 57.00% (+47.90)
3) FastFalcon05 - CATS 11.02% - M. Knight 15.01% - Princess Peach 19.54% - Sephiroth 54.43% (+47.90)
5) MJG3456789 - CATS 7.77% - M. Knight 17.23% - Princess Peach 17.00% - Sephiroth 58.00% (+47.79)

WiggumFan is today's top predictor! He's had three previous top 5's in other contests, including two previous #1 picks. MoogleKupo made the second best prediction, his third lifetime top 5 pick. MegatokyoEd and FastFalcon tied for third with two completely different predictions for every character - crazy! MJG3456789 got fifth, making the top 5 on his second prediction ever!

Complete Match Ranking:

2) MegatokyoEd - 420.68
3) Haste2 - 419.72
4) King Morgoth - 419.14
5) supdawg - 419.07

The n00b Avenger enjoys his fourth straight day in first place. We don't have anyone new on today's leaderboard, but MegatokyoEd moves up two spots, bumping Haste2 and King Morgoth down one spot each. Supdawg holds on to fifth place today.

Team Dartboard (Starion & MoogleKupo) and Team T-REX (TRE & Xcarvengerx) both get their first top 5s.

I think team "We used to be good?" has a highly misleading name.

You guys need to change it to "We will be the best!" or something :)

I had a real good feeling for Fox in this contest, too bad it wasn't until after lockdown. I said it was gonna be Fox's year earlier. He's surpassing what even I expected here though.

This is partially SFF, especially over Falcon (who I think would comfortably win over Wario 1-on-1), but he'd easily beat these other two one-on-one anyway.

Bet you're kicking yourself for that change now, huh KM?

And finally, I might get an upset right that few others called. Of course my oracle won't be much better to show for it, but same thing happened with Ryu/Bowser.

I figured I was far away enough from the consensus already....my original was just brutal but it was too far away from the pack even for my taste. I wanted what I considered an "easy" 2 points over most instead of trying to go for 4 or something. It's only Day 10 after all....

One of the last-day changes I made was switching from Fox>Falcon to Fox>Wario, is it going to come back and bite me? =P

Heh, I'm in the same boat, that was one of the last changes I made too. People's talk about Wario Ware games meaning Wario is stronger now convinced me. And maybe it was a good change, even though I didn't feel good about it, you know what I mean?

Looks like Wario's going to build up a lead here, but Falcon might slaughter him with the afterschool vote.

MJ, wrong topic buddy.

Gah, I realize I'm 0/1 on calling these, but... today I've got to pick against my bracket, I've just got this feeling that Falcon's going to leg this one out. Crono's one of the worst in the world with it lately, I know, but at least CF has shown he can pull off a nice little Day Vote swing against somebody, whereas Wario strikes me as more of a Night kind of guy. Sure he's got Warioware and all that jazz, but come now, what kiddie doesn't love to FAAAALCON PUUUUNCH?

1) Bowser > Auron > Ryu - That's still my call next round. How crazy am I?

I've got Auron over Bowser, with no Mewtwo and Toad bringing him down Ryu won't top Bowser.

2) Alright, now that you've said my bracket's screwed, is yours too?

25/36 is bad, right? And I have Jill and Peach both advancing another round...

3) Toad vs Ness?

Ness.

4) Not bothering to ask if Mewtwo deserves to come back, we all know he will. Easy one, out of those, who would he beat ?
Ness, Gordon, Yuna, Yoshi, DK, Tidus, Knuckles.

Ness and Gordon easily, Donkey Kong and Knuckles possibly. Don't see him taking Yuna, Yoshi or even that other loser.

5) Ngamer suggested poll: Peach or Meta Knight, who'll take 2nd today?

Peach. Duh.

Well, looks like I was partially right... Wario's getting hit pretty hard in the kiddie vote, having lost nearly a percent already since the afterschool rush started up. Unfortunately Falcon's still falling slowly, while Banjo appears to be the one making a slight move forward. And, of course, Fox just keeps making our low predictions look more and more silly.

2) "Do a Barrel Roll!" vs "You'll never defeat ANDROSS!" ?
3) 4-way match of the day : Fox vs Ness vs DK vs Zelos. Who do you take for 1st and 2nd?
4) Oracle question: how tough is it to predict this contest, regardless of the scores.
5) lol Wario. Alright, that's not a question but I can't stand him =P

Fox. Though I was thinking Meta-Knight right before Fox's match started.

2) "Do a Barrel Roll!" vs "You'll never defeat ANDROSS!" ?

"Do a Barrel Roll!" easily

3) 4-way match of the day : Fox vs Ness vs DK vs Zelos. Who do you take for 1st and 2nd?

What the hell is Zelos doing here? Fox > DK

4) Oracle question: how tough is it to predict this contest, regardless of the scores.

Toughest by far.

5) lol Wario. Alright, that's not a question but I can't stand him =P

1) Who takes second next round? Fox or Meta-Knight?

This is an unpredictable contest, and yet Fox still seems like a virtual lock.

2) "Do a Barrel Roll!" vs "You'll never defeat ANDROSS!" ?

Do a Barrel Roll for sure! One of the great gaming quotes. Always puts a smile on my face.

3) 4-way match of the day : Fox vs Ness vs DK vs Zelos. Who do you take for 1st and 2nd?

Tough. (is there a reason Zelos is in here?) No idea really between the other three.

4) Oracle question: how tough is it to predict this contest, regardless of the scores.

About as tough as any other I guess.

5) lol Wario. Alright, that's not a question but I can't stand him =P

I wonder how badly a hypothetical WaPeach would do in one of these.

Match # 10 Results
Fox McCloud 45.63%
Wario 22.51%
Captain Falcon 18.79%
Banjo 13.07%

Yesterday Fox put on a clinic against Wario and made us wonder why he hasn't been in the contest for the last four years. Even though there was some debate about whether Fox or Wario would win, Fox ended up doubling Wario. 34 people had Wario > Fox while 89 had Fox > Wario. Another 11 had Fox > Falcon, which looked like a possibility early in the match. The other 8 predictors had various longshot predictions. The consensus was Banjo 17.06%, Falcon 21.47%, Fox 32.27%, Wario 29.07%.

Best Five Picks:
1) hochiminh155 - Banjo 16.08% - Captain Falcon 12.22% - Fox McCloud 47.11% - Wario 24.59% (+46.71)
2) BBallman7 - Banjo 18.64% - Captain Falcon 14.77% - Fox McCloud 42.95% - Wario 23.64% (+46.65)
3) red sox 777 - Banjo 11.00% - Captain Falcon 24.00% - Fox McCloud 40.00% - Wario 25.00% (+46.15)
4) Redtooth - Banjo 20.10% - Captain Falcon 19.88% - Fox McCloud 40.01% - Wario 20.01% (+45.94)
5) Lopen - Banjo 12.11% - Captain Falcon 19.92% - Fox McCloud 38.42% - Wario 29.55% (+45.91)

Today was quite a low scoring day, with no one over 47 points. Hochiminh155 had the best pick for his second top 5 in three days. BBallman got second, his first top 5 ever. Red sox 777 was third, followed by Redtooth (apparently today was a good day for people with "red" in their name). Lopen was fifth, placing in the top 5 for the first time since day 1.

Complete Match Ranking:

3) MegatokyoEd - 464.36

5) Master Moltar - 463.01

King Morgoth continues to climb the standings, today bumping MegatokyoEd and Haste2 out of his way as he takes second! The n00b Avenger remains in first place for the fifth straight day. MegatokyoEd and Haste2 each drop a spot to third and fourth. Master Moltar moves on to the leaderboard in 5th, displacing supdawg and turing this into an old school leaderboard - everyone except MegatokyoEd has been around since the first Oracle Challenge in 2k3.

I wonder how badly a hypothetical WaPeach would do in one of these.

Tough. (is there a reason Zelos is in here?) No idea really between the other three.

I tried to think, on the spot, of a weakling that had a SMALL shot at going through if the other three split it, and unfortunately, I couldn't think of anything else.

Morgoth's Quickie Quick Questions! - Contest Day 10

1) Who takes second next round? Fox or Meta-Knight?

Fox, and I don't even see it being in contention. MK's going to hold up better than Falcon thanks to having a more dedicated fanbase outside of the Smash Bros world, but all that really means for him is that he'll be able to give Wario a run. I foresee Seph disappointing a touch again but still gathering almost half the votes while Fox slaughters, and Wario will hold a slim lead on third before collapsing in the day and letting MK roll over him.

2) "Do a Barrel Roll!" vs "You'll never defeat ANDROSS!" ?

Barrell Roll easily. But my personal favorite is

I admit defeat...

...IF THIS DOES NOT WORK!

3) 4-way match of the day : Fox vs Ness vs DK vs Zelos. Who do you take for 1st and 2nd?

Where the devil did Zelos come from? Anyways I'd take Fox over DK in a tight one, with Ness way behind and Zelos way way behind. I'd also take Fox over DK 1v1 as it currently stands, though I think it would be even closer than you'd see in the current format.

4) Oracle question: how tough is it to predict this contest, regardless of the scores.

It's incredibly tough, and the first five nights or so I was astonished to actually be moving UP in the rankings with how poorly I thought I'd guessed. Since then I've learned not to beat myself up when it looks like my score is going to implode, because my conservative style appears to be well-suited to this format to the point where even a really awful day only turns out an average day, relatively.

5) lol Wario. Alright, that's not a question but I can't stand him =P

I worked hard in the rally for him for the sake of Guru winner Rufus, so in that respect I was proud to see him meet expectations (sort of) and post a win here in 2007. But yeah, I'm not too much a fan of him personally, and I love playing as Falcon in SSB, so that upset would have still been cool.

Should've picked Phoenix Wright. <3

Zidane/Duke Nukem might also fit in there.

1) Who takes second next round? Fox or Meta-Knight?
Right before Fox's domination, I thought MK had a chance. Not anymore...

2) "Do a Barrel Roll!" vs "You'll never defeat ANDROSS!" ?
ANDROOOOOSSSSSSSS....

3) 4-way match of the day : Fox vs Ness vs DK vs Zelos. Who do you take for 1st and 2nd?
Zelos > Ness... okay...um... Fox > DK, I guess. I'm amazed he might've increased so much, but considering Kirby did the same, maybe I shouldn't be so surprised.

4) Oracle question: how tough is it to predict this contest, regardless of the scores.
The Oracle's much easier than the actual contest this time, heh. I don't think it's too hard, since it follows x-stats quite well and all.... heh.

5) lol Wario. Alright, that's not a question but I can't stand him =P
lol Wario meaning Wario is the epitome of being awesome, m i right?

1) Who takes second next round? Fox or Meta-Knight?

I've got the Princess, but out of those two I think I'd take Fox. Meta surprised me, but Fox put up a gangbusters performance.

2) "Do a Barrel Roll!" vs "You'll never defeat ANDROSS!" ?

Guh.

3) 4-way match of the day : Fox vs Ness vs DK vs Zelos. Who do you take for 1st and 2nd?

Not Zelos. I like Earthbound as much as the next guy, as long as the next guy isn't one of those people who hate it, but I don't think he could keep up with people he used to be even with any longer.

4) Oracle question: how tough is it to predict this contest, regardless of the scores.

It'll be the odd answer with this contest being the toughest to predict for, but it's the easiest for me when we don't take scores into account. I spend about ten seconds on my predictions at this point. I used to try and think them out, but I play games a lot less these days and have no clue what's going on with any of the current generation of games, so half the characters I don't even recognize and/or have no clue as to their popularity. So I pretty much fill in percentages for the characters I know and throw whatever else is left to the other characters.

5) lol Wario. Alright, that's not a question but I can't stand him =P

lol any Mario abortion that managed to live..

1) Who takes second next round? Fox or Meta-Knight?

Fox. Meta Knight impressed, but Fox was amazing... he doubled the guy who was supposed to be competing with him.

2) "Do a Barrel Roll!" vs "You'll never defeat ANDROSS!" ?

You'll never defeat ANDROSS!

3) 4-way match of the day : Fox vs Ness vs DK vs Zelos. Who do you take for 1st and 2nd?

Fox > DK, I'm guessing. DK would try to find way to choke, but I can't see him losing to Ness.

4) Oracle question: how tough is it to predict this contest, regardless of the scores.

It feels very tough. Coming up with percentages is hard, and then every day it seems like I'm doing bad... until I realize that everyone else is too.

5) lol Wario. Alright, that's not a question but I can't stand him =P

Indeed!

1) Who takes second next round? Fox or Meta-Knight?
Fox, no problem

2) "Do a Barrel Roll!" vs "You'll never defeat ANDROSS!" ?
Do a Barrel Roll!
More comedic

3) 4-way match of the day : Fox vs Ness vs DK vs Zelos. Who do you take for 1st and 2nd?
Fox > DK, despite SFF; I think Zelos is that weak

4) Oracle question: how tough is it to predict this contest, regardless of the scores.
Some matches are relatively easy - when one persons score is basically locked and everybody else is fighting for leftovers - but I think a lot of these matches look easy and end up being WAY off. I love it

5) lol Wario. Alright, that's not a question but I can't stand him =P
LOL

GAWD Giggs, 102 for yesterday?

If you had scored like 1.1 points higher, we'd have been in 8th for the day instead of 22nd.

And creativename's works well again. I'd like to see all four adjusted down from that, still.
