SC2k7 Oracle Challenge Discussion Topic 2
From: Xcarvengerx | Posted: 9/27/2007 6:43:00 AM | Message Detail
Damn, I shouldn't change my original prediction for today. I had (still up in the oracle site):
Kirby - 50.04%
L-Block - 25.81%
Laharl - 15.48%
Nathan Hale - 8.63%

Now I had something really bad (can't be bothered to look for it)... I knew I increased Kirby's % and decreased L-Block's % by quite a lot... Gawd, what was I thinking? -_-

If Kirby keeps gaining, he may not quite take 1st, but Kirby has to gain a lot more (though the after-school vote starts basically right now, so..)

Hey KM, for tonight I think a poll asking "most shocking result of Round One?" could be a real interesting talking point, if you listed the five top options or so. Would have to imagine L-Block would be right up there...

New characters are tougher to predict. They have much bigger ranges than vets.

L-Block doing well is awesome though.

Is there any chance of getting a list of character who most over/under-performed their Oracle predictions - both relatively and in terms of points? (maybe when the 1st round ends) Would that take a lot of work?

In fact maybe there could be a feature on the site that compares characters' performances to Oracle consensus? That would be fun.

I think Kratos might dominate in this upcoming match.

There's something wrong with the website. It says I had the best prediction yesterday, that is clearly impossible.

Seriously.....wow. I'm stunned. My jaw dropped when I saw that.

Match # 25 Results
Kirby 44.39%
L-Block 30.89%
Laharl 16.95%
Nathan Hale 7.78%

Today we witnessed that rarest of all contests beasts, a successful joke character. L-Block started the poll well ahead of Kirby and easily ended up with a second place finish, nearly doubling Laharl. The consensus predictions were Kirby - 50.96%; L-Block - 18.97%; Laharl - 19.01%; Nathan - 10.99%. The average score was 43.52.

Best Five Picks:
1) DpObliVion - Kirby 47.50% - L-Block 26.50% - Laharl 18.50% - Nathan 7.50% (+47.66)
2) Lieutenant Kettch - Kirby 46.65% - L-Block 25.17% - Laharl 20.57% - Nathan 7.61% (+47.05)
3) Paratroopa1 - Kirby 49.36% - L-Block 27.53% - Laharl 14.23% - Nathan 8.88% (+46.96)
4) IhatethisCPU - Kirby 40.00% - L-Block 35.00% - Laharl 15.00% - Nathan 10.00% (+46.83)
5) daniel2424 - Kirby 49.24% - L-Block 28.24% - Laharl 13.24% - Nathan 9.28% (+46.82)

DpOblivion has the top pick for the first time ever. Lieutenant Kettch has a good day today with the 2nd best pick - he climbs 9 spots in the overall standings after dropping 9 spots in the last two days. Oracle veteran and composer extraordinaire Paratroopa gets in the top 5 for the first time this contest in 3rd. IhatethisCPU gets fourth, proving how screwed up yesterday's results were, while daniel2424 gets fifth, the 20th lifetime top 5 for this old timer.

3) creativename - 1157.95
4) supdawg - 1157.80
5) MegatokyoEd - 1157.10

N00b Avenger maintains his deathgrip on first place. Today Moltar moves up to second while supdawg drops back down from second to fourth. Creativename stays where he is in third place. MegatokyoEd moves back onto the leaderboard in 5th at the expense of Haste2.

2) Paraswirlsion - 90.48 (Paratroopa1: +46.96 / swirldude: +0.00)

4) Of Wolf and Man - 89.78 (Zylo the wolf: +0.00 / Vlado: +46.26)
5) One-Two Punch - 89.42 (th3l3fty: +44.78 / yazzy14: +44.64)

The top 4 teams today were all solo predictions, which isn't too surprising for such a crazy match (the scoring rules for when your partner misses a match make it easier to be in the top 5 if the result is unexpected). DpOblivion's Mets & Sonic at the Oracle Games is first, followed by Paratroopa's Paraswirlsion. IhatethisCPU carries Team It's An Upset! And You're On Your Own to third, and Vlado gets fourth for Team of Wolf and Man. The dead weight on those four teams was WiggumFan, swirldude, GameBopAdv, and Zylo the Wolf, respectively. The first real team is Team One-Two Punch (th3l3fty and yazzy), in fifth.

5) Team We Used To Be Good? (Kaxon / King Morgoth) - 2300.87

The top two spots are unchanged from yesterday, but Team mvp's gains a little more ground - they still trail by over 7 points, however. Team Rage of Warcraft moves up to third and Team Big Black Wangs to fourth, while the oracle hosts tumble to fifth place.

It's not that hard... I'll post that at the end of round 1 if you remind me.

This would be a little harder, although it would be cool to have. I wouldn't expect it soon though... Morgoth is pretty busy.

I don't know how you'd like to see this presented, it's already on each character's individual page. And no the numbers aren't right for 2k7 due to a bunch of coding issues....

Oh wow, that's terrific! I had no idea. That's a great feature. You guys should make the menus font bigger and make them look more like links (I know they're links but even I often forget)

But what I was thinking was a list of the difference between character's consensus and their performance, either with all matches ever, or with the top 50 top and bottom differences. There could be two lists, one by gross points, one by relative percent (e.g. getting 20% vs. consensus 25% would be -5 points, and -20% or -25% relative depending on the denominator) If you have the a good MySQL class with a result_to_array() type function it shouldn't be too hard to get results into an array and sort them (probably what you already do).

Hey NGamer, you're the best predictor for Aeris ever :) (the character who I randomly clicked on)

Or instead of bothering with a relative percentage difference, you could do everything by straight-up points, but weight by number of competitors in the match (e.g. differences in this format would weight for double)

So how much does Link win with this year, CLink master? :)

I just went to Donkey Kong because I wanted to see whose good at predicting this notoriously unpredictable character...and *I'm* #2. What the hell??

Also, this is quite minor, but could the colors for consensus over/underperformance be switched? Red means 'bad' to me, but characters that do better than expectations will have lots of red.

Woah. Think we'll break the overall top 10?

Maybe, I'm not sure how everyone else is doing. Our current score for today is now 98.31 which I think is pretty good as it means we're both scoring 49+. I'm on 49.19 for the day and you're on 49.12. Even if we don't make the top 10 overall, I think we'll be in the top 5 teams for today. I know today is a good day for everyone but I'm sure there can't be too many teams where both members got 49+.

I've filled in like 90% of the predictions for today into my spreadsheet and you're fourth for the day at the moment. I'm first. Yes, I have just made this post because I'm currently first as I really don't expect to stay there once the day vote swings the percentages >_>

Huh, it looks like several of my predictions didn't go through. I've only missed one or two so far, yet I'm down 8 picks. o.O

That's because you've been submitting a LOT of predictions late. In the rules it says:

3) All predictions must be made five minutes before the usual start time of that match's poll (approx. 11:55pm EST, 10:55am CST, 8:55pm PST). Predictions submitted after this time will not be counted or may be subject to penalty. No predictions will be accepted after a poll has started, regardless of the start time.

I give people leeway if they get their prediction in before the start of the match, but not if they abuse it. I posted two warnings and then I stopped accepting your late predictions:

Match # 26 Results
Kratos (God of War) 40.13%
Donkey Kong 27.66%
Marth 20.65%
Prince of All Cosmos 11.56%

By this contest's standards today was an unsurprising day - Kratos exceeded expectations by about 5%, but nothing too shocking occurred. The consensus predictions were Donkey Kong - 30.28%; Kratos - 34.87%; Marth - 21.76%; Prince of All Cosmos - 12.94%. Out of 117 predictors, 84 had Kratos first and DK second while the other 33 had the wrong order. The average score was 46.35 points.

Best Five Picks:
1) Haste2 - Donkey Kong 27.00% - Kratos (GoW) 40.00% - Marth 21.00% - The Prince 13.00% (+49.35)
2) DaruniaTheGoron - Donkey Kong 28.00% - Kratos (GoW) 39.00% - Marth 20.00% - The Prince 13.00% (+49.11)
3) Master Moltar - Donkey Kong 27.70% - Kratos (GoW) 38.30% - Marth 21.50% - The Prince 12.50% (+49.08)
4) The n00b Avenger - Donkey Kong 28.25% - Kratos (GoW) 38.38% - Marth 21.94% - The Prince 11.41% (+49.05)
5) ShatteredElysium - Donkey Kong 29.41% - Kratos (GoW) 40.57% - Marth 19.27% - The Prince 10.75% (+48.90)

Haste2 has the best pick, his 32nd lifetime top 5. This moves him into sole possesion of the record for most top 5's - previously he was tied with Rodri (who vanished after day 16) and Ringworm. DaruniaTheGoron gets second for his third top 5 of the contest. Two more guys with lots of top 5's, Master Moltar and The n00b Avenger, get third and fourth. Finally, ShatteredElysium gets his first career top 5 in fifth place.

Complete Match Ranking:
http://www.oraclechallenge.com/archives.php?contest=SC2k7&type=match&match=26

Current Leaderboard:
1) The n00b Avenger - 1212.93
2) Master Moltar - 1208.74
3) Haste2 - 1205.79
4) creativename - 1205.13
5) Ngamer64 - 1204.57

The competition on the leaderboard is fierce! Yesterday's top 2, Moltar and The n00b Avenger, both had top 5 predictions today - Moltar's was better, but n00b kept him from gaining much ground. Meanwhile Haste2 jumps from 7th to 3rd on the back of his own top pick. Creativename drops one spot to fourth while Ngamer moves up one spot to 5th, reuniting the teammates.

The Drunkadelict Armadillos are first, followed by Team Ice Cream (BZer0 and SE). ted crunkensteinsience and the AUGHs take third for the second time in 3 days. Team Happy Happyists make their latest of many team top 5 appearances, while Team T-REX grabs the last spot in fifth.

No top 5? Oh well, no biggy. There were 5 better predictions than mine so my top 5 wasn't deserved anyway.

As long as I keep managing to claw back up the standings I'm happy. I'm targetting a Top 50 finish which is probably just about doable if I keep putting in consistent performances that are top 30 or so per day. I think I should be up to 83rd after today which isn't bad considering I was 94th I think after my missed prediction. It's just the gaps between users are pretty big so it's hard to make any big climbs per day.

At least the Tag Team side of things isn't a lost cause. Let's hope for another Top 5 finish today teamwise BZer0.

Man, we both fell below 49? That's... slightly disappointing. Have you noticed a trend, though, SE? We've now been 5th, 4th and 3rd (in that order) on the top 5. This can only mean that we'll be 2nd next time, and then we'll finally get a 1st place.

We're also 1.97 points closer to the team top 10, and I think we're doing pretty good today as well. :)

My spreadsheet says we're doing pretty well today. We're both in the Top 15, you're 6th and I'm 14th, although I've only filled in like 90% of the predictions again in my spreadsheet so it might be slightly inaccurate. The only problem is we're both dropping in points. Having said that, more or less everyone is dropping points as Nightmare climbs so it might not matter too much.

And LFF owns our Oracle predictions once again.

Sigh, when will we learn...

Match # 27 Results
Solid Snake 57.88%
Nightmare 22.47%
Vyse 10.51%
Rayman 9.15%

Fodder Failure Factor continues to prove its power! Rayman and Vyse both looked awful today, Rayman falling below 10% and Vyse not doing much better. Solid Snake looked every bit like the guy who beat Sephiroth last year, and Nightmare did respectably. The consensus predictions were Nightmare - 18.43%; Rayman - 11.57%; Solid Snake - 54.78%; Vyse - 15.24%. Today everyone had the obvious pick of Snake winning (never a guarantee with this group of oracles); 89 had Nightmare second, 30 had Vyse, and 3 had Rayman. The average score was 45.74 points.

Best Five Picks:
1) transience - Nightmare 21.56% - Rayman 8.47% - Solid Snake 55.65% - Vyse 14.32% (+48.09)
2) yazzy14 - Nightmare 19.18% - Rayman 10.40% - Solid Snake 57.33% - Vyse 13.09% (+48.08)
3) Who Cares? - Nightmare 19.50% - Rayman 10.50% - Solid Snake 57.00% - Vyse 13.00% (+48.07)
4) KingBartz - Nightmare 19.00% - Rayman 11.00% - Solid Snake 60.00% - Vyse 10.00% (+48.01)
5) Vlado - Nightmare 18.71% - Rayman 9.28% - Solid Snake 57.17% - Vyse 14.84% (+47.76)

The winner in this extremely close top 5 is none other than the man known as tranny! His 48.09 points beat out yazzy's 48.08 and Who Cares?'s 48.07. This is the third top 5 of the contest for transience and the second each for yazzy and Who Cares?. KingBartz gets fourth with another one of his advance picks, and Vlado gets fifth.
