Back in the old days (2004 and 2005), when you picked the wrong winner you got 45-2x points instead of 45-x. This was really punishing in matches like Mario/Samus, which were expected to be close but weren't... someone who picked Mario with 50% in that match scored almost 25 points more than someone who picked Samus with 50%, despite the fact that they both were predicting a very close match.
